Job Summary

Gilbert Industries designs, engineers, and fabricates custom steel tanks, pressure vessels, and prefabricated piping systems for the oil & gas, chemical, food and beverage, agriculture, and pharmaceutical industries. We build to API, ASME, AWWA, NFPA, and UL standards and serve clients nationwide from concept through fabrication and on-site installation.

The Engineer is responsible for performing engineering calculations, reviewing customer specifications; checking drawings for code compliance, and design soundness; supporting the Sales team on technical questions and quotes, and developing standard design components that make our work faster and more consistent. This role works closely with drafters, project managers, quality, and production to deliver safe, compliant, cost-effective designs that meet customer specifications and applicable codes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering calculations for steel tanks, ASME pressure vessels, and prefabricated piping systems, including stress, thickness, weld, support, and load analyses to applicable codes.
  • Check and review drawings for code compliance (API, ASME, AWWA, NFPA, UL), sound engineering design, and conformance to company drafting standards and customer specifications.
  • Review drawings and documents for correctness, completeness, dimensional accuracy, grammar, and clarity before release.
  • Support the Sales team with technical input, design feasibility reviews, calculations, and engineering content for quotes and customer questions.
  • Develop and maintain standard design components, templates, and reusable details to improve consistency, accuracy, and turnaround across projects.
  • Prepare and review engineering documentation, design specifications, and calculation packages to support fabrication and regulatory submittals.
  • Collaborate with project managers, quality, purchasing, and production (fabrication) to resolve design issues and keep projects on schedule.
  • Interpret customer specifications, codes, and standards, and apply them correctly to each project.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering processes, design tools, and documentation practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of API and ASME codes. Working knowledge of other applicable codes and standards (AWWA, NFPA, UL) relevant to tanks, pressure vessels, or piping is a plus.
  • Ability to perform and document engineering calculations and design analysis.
  • Proficiency reviewing and checking technical drawings for accuracy, code compliance, and drafting standards.
  • Strong attention to detail, including correctness and grammar in technical documentation.
  • Effective written and verbal communication; able to support Sales and collaborate across departments.
  • Proficiency with engineering and CAD software, and standard office tools.
  • Three or more years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience designing steel tanks, ASME pressure vessels, or prefabricated piping systems.
  • Experience in an industrial fabrication or custom manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with both in-shop fabrication and field construction requirements.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
  • Experience developing standard design components or design automation tools.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform FEA (finite element analysis).

Education

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil/Structural, or related engineering discipline, or equivalent combination of education and relevant industry experience.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based engineering work with periodic time in the fabrication shop and occasional field/job-site visits.
  • Shop and field environments may involve exposure to noise, dust, fumes, moving equipment, and varying temperatures; required PPE must be worn in those areas.
  • Must be able to occasionally walk and stand on uneven surfaces, climb stairs or ladders, and access elevated or confined work areas during site or shop visits.
  • Frequent computer use, including extended periods of sitting and detailed visual review of drawings and documents.
  • Occasional travel to customer locations.
  • Occasional lifting of items up to 25 lbs.
