Bedrock Energy is on a mission to transform the heating and cooling of buildings, using carbon-free, hyper-efficient, and ultra-safe geothermal energy to radically reduce costs for people and the environment. Incorporated in 2022, we are funded by top investors in climate and energy and are gathering exceptional talent to scale geothermal energy to decarbonize buildings everywhere. We’re seeking creative, collaborative, proactive team members who inspire us with their high standards of excellence, integrity, and commitment to our shared mission.

Position Summary

Bedrock Energy is hiring a Mud Operator to own the fluid system during drilling operations. This role is responsible for mud mixing, fluid property monitoring, solids control, tank management, and field visibility into subsurface conditions through returns and shaker activity. The Mud Operator is a critical partner to the Driller and helps maintain drilling performance, pressure control, and borehole quality.

This is a hitch-based role. Crew work rotations at project sites across the US. Bedrock covers travel to and from site, lodging during your hitch, and provides a per diem for meals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mix drilling mud to spec and maintain fluid properties during operations
  • Monitor viscosity, density, pH, tank levels, returns, and other fluid indicators
  • Operate and maintain solids control equipment
  • Good communication with the driller, reporting fluid changes, losses, clogged screens, or abnormal returns
  • Manage and accurately track inventory and direct support tasks to the Pump Operator as needed
  • Assist in other normal geothermal drilling operations tasks as required; rig-up, bore swaps, BHA support, loop running support, grouting, and equipment maintenance
  • Document chemical usage, mud properties, inventory needs, and notable field events
  • Help maintain active awareness of formation changes and drilling conditions through returns and cuttings observation

Preferred Background

  • 2-5 years of relevant experience
  • O&G mud engineer, derrickman, or mud man
  • Water well mud rotary drilling experience
  • Experience with mud handling, solids control, and field diagnostics
  • Forklift experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Can mix fluids to spec without direct supervision
  • Understands rheology basics such as marsh funnel viscosity, density, and pH
  • Has operated solids control equipment such as shakers and desanders
  • Can manage pit volumes and fluid systems during active operations
  • Strong work ethic, communication, and field awareness
