Position Overview
We’re seeking an energetic, organized, and hands-on Camp Director to lead our youth sailing summer camp. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who loves engaging kids in the outdoors, has strong interpersonal and leadership skills, is dependable, and can manage the operational, instructional, and safety aspects of the camp. Our camps run from the last week in June to the first week of September, Monday through Friday from 9:30-4:00. Campers range in age from 6 to 18, with 60 to 80 kids enrolled each week.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary point of contact for program participants and parents.
- Hire and onboard seasonal sailing instructors beginning in February.
- Supervise, mentor, and support sailing instructors and camp staff
- Oversee daily camp operations, ensuring safety and high-quality instruction
- Manage camper registration
- Manage and track camp budgets, payroll, and operational expenses
- Maintain a culture of safety—ensure all activities comply with sailing and waterfront safety standards
- Manage minor boat repairs, log, and communicate maintenance needs for boats and equipment
- Collaborate with the Race Team Director to align events and program goals
- Troubleshoot issues as they arise and provide hands-on leadership on the dock and water
- Promote GHJS by fostering strong relationships with camp families and the Gig Harbor community
Qualifications
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
- Experience working with youth programs, sailing instruction, or camp management preferred
- Ability to manage registration procedures and budget management software
- Experience operating a small powerboat and a strong understanding of safety practices
- Positive, professional attitude with a passion for youth development, especially in the outdoors
- Obtain or hold the US Sailing Level 1 Instructor certification
- Obtain or hold the required Washington State Boater Education Card
- Obtain or hold the CPR/First Aid certification
Schedule & Compensation
Start date: Position to begin as soon as possible
Spring–Fall (April–September):Full-time, on-site Monday–Friday, 40 hours per week. This period includes spring planning and setup, all summer camp operations, and fall wrap-up.
Off-Season (October–March):Opportunities for full-time or part-time work with a more flexible schedule. Responsibilities include program planning and scheduling, communications with parents, registration, scholarship applications, staff hiring, assistance with the annual auction, and coordinating maintenance projects. Extended time off during winter (December–February) may be available if desired.
Compensation:$30–$40 per hour, depending on experience.
