Director — Gibson County Animal Services

Gibson County is seeking a qualified and motivated professional to serve as Director of Gibson County Animal Services. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of shelter and animal control operations, ensuring the humane care of animals, and serving as the public face of Gibson County Animal Services in partnership with the Animal Services Board, the Board of Commissioners, and the County Council.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct day-to-day operations of the Gibson County animal shelter and animal control services
  • Supervise and manage staff and volunteers, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation
  • Ensure proper medical care, nutrition, sanitation, and enrichment for all animals in care
  • Maintain accurate records of animal intake, disposition, euthanasia, controlled substances, and donor activity
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal animal welfare laws and regulations
  • Coordinate spay/neuter, vaccination, and disease-control programs, and manage shelter population through rescue and transfer partnerships
  • Serve as Animal Control Officer when needed and coordinate with law enforcement on animal-related calls
  • Lead fundraising campaigns, donor stewardship, grant applications, and community education programs
  • Prepare and manage the annual operating budget and report regularly to the Animal Services Board, Commissioners, and Council
  • Oversee facility maintenance, including sanitation, kennel upkeep, and grounds

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or HSE equivalent; must be at least 18 years of age
  • Valid Indiana driver's license and a safe driving record (required)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of management experience, preferably in animal welfare, nonprofit operations, or public service
  • Demonstrated experience in a shelter, rescue, veterinary clinic, or animal husbandry setting (leadership preferred)
  • Working knowledge of animal control ordinances, disease prevention, and humane handling practices
  • Budget management and grant writing experience
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution, and public relations skills
  • Ability to pass a background check, pre-employment drug screen, and physical examination
  • Must be able to lift animals up to 100 pounds and work extended hours, weekends, evenings, and on-call as needed
