GENERAL SUMMARY

Under regular supervision of Director of Radiology, performs a variety of secretarial, clerical and tech assistant duties.  These tasks range from answering the phones,   maintaining Radiology order with correct information, maintaining the Radiologist/Radiology schedule, and various other professional duties in the radiology department. Clerk must have a positive attitude in accordance with excellent customer service.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.    Shows and proves competency on department exams in all modalities and PACS system.

2.    Shows and proves competency on computer. 

3.    Follows-thru on requests from supervisor and physician offices. 

4.     Keeps work area clean and organized.

5.     Actively seeks to help others whenever possible and is willing to take on extra duties. 
 
6.    Strictly follows B.S.I. and other infection control guidelines. 

7.    Willing to work odd hours during emergencies and vacations.

8.     Keeps paperwork current and correct.

9.    Obtain orders from Patient Access.

10.    Review orders for accuracy, which includes proper name, date of birth, Physician’s signature, exam name, proper and payable diagnosis and CPT codes and exam description, correct side (Left, Right, or Bilateral), appropriate number of views for exam, and review PACS for previous exams.

11.    Willing to contact Physician’s office to obtain corrected orders, or to clarify any orders that do not seem accurate.

12.    Return all correct orders to Patient Access.

13.    Document in Evident any specific notes for Radiology staff.

14.    Ensure all Radiology exams are scheduled appropriately with the correct time blocked.

15.    Monitor the Radiologist’s procedure schedule, and give guidance to scheduling as to when to schedule specific exams/procedures.

16.    Review lab work results for patients that you know will be receiving contrast.

17.    Call patients to ensure they are properly prepped for their upcoming exams.  Examples, NPO, discontinued blood thinners or other specific medications, and arriving at an appropriate time, among other prepping instruction for patients.

18.    Fill out paperwork for pre-procedure calls to patients and post procedure calls to patients.  Give necessary paperwork to appropriate staff that will be caring for the patient.

19.    Makes self-available to the technologists. 

20.    Must be able to handle dissatisfied customers with care and compassion.

21.    Maintain patient privacy and dignity during phone calls.  Understand HIPAA and the relationship of trust with the patient.
 

Qualifications:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1.    Prolonged sitting at work station, and frequent trips to Patient Access for paperwork. 

2.    Heavy phone contact and some patient contact.

3.    Able to concentrate on detailed work for prolonged periods of time.

4.    Able to adjust routine to accommodate patient or department without affecting departmental flow. 

5.    Must be able to: walk, stand or sit for prolonged periods of time, see objects clearly, and hear normal sounds with some background noises.  Must exhibit good hand-eye coordination.

6.    Ability to concentrate on moderate detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for less than 10 to 20 minutes at a time. 

7.    Individual must be able to understand and relate to specific ideas generally, several at a time, and be able to communicate verbally, and remember tasks for full shift. 

8.    Emotional stability conducive to dealing with a high stress level for eight or more hours at a time. Stress may be associated with: caring for patients, emotional demands of patients and their families, demands of maintaining effective working relationships with peers, managers, physicians, and other health care workers, and dealing with multiple tasks at one time. 

9.    Keen mental facilities are needed to perform assessment and decision making skills in the day-to-day practice within the department and facility.

10.    Physical strength to perform the following lifting tasks:

•    Floor to waist - 20 pounds
•    14” to waist - 30 pounds
•    Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds
•    Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds
•    Carry 30 pounds for 15 feet
•    Push 40 pounds/force for 30 feet
•    Pull 40 pounds/force for 15 feet

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

     Reports to the Director of Radiology. 
 

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1.    High school graduate or equivalent

2.    Clerical, typing, filing, computer and patient skills required.

3.    Good communication skills in person, on telephone, and via email.  Must be able to deal courteously and effectively with doctors, patients, and other health care workers.

4.    Must be highly organized. 

5.     Must be able to follow oral and written communications. 

6.    Strong knowledge of Imaging exams or previous experience as a Radiologic Technologist.


INFECTION EXPOSURE RISK LEVEL
Category 2– Minimal Risk - This job may expose you occasionally or in emergency situations to blood, body fluids or tissue.  The Hepatitis B vaccine shall be made available.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1.    Office setting, worker must adjust to performing routine, repetitive tasks under specific supervision.

2.    Worker will be performing in the outpatient clinic and patient access.
