GENERAL SUMMARY
The OB Manager is responsible for the overall operation of a Clinical Department and assists the Executive Director of Nursing and Assistant Executive Director of Inpatient Services in accomplishing the division of nursing objectives. The person has 24-hour responsibility and accountability for all patient care activities, unit operation, and staff function.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Directs and supervises unit staff in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating patient care in a unit according to pre-defined standards.
2. Directs and supervises staff via clinical round, staff meeting participation, individual communications and performance appraisal.
3. Demonstrates clinical competency in select areas of applied knowledge/skills/standards/clinical decision-making as appropriate for the department’s patient population.
4. Ensures that patient care/nursing practice in the department meets both safety/risk management standards and legal requirements of licensing boards/regulatory agencies.
5. Identifies department resources and needs; develops, allocates, administers and evaluates the unit budget, while directing and delegating appropriate aspects of the budget
6. Holds, chairs, attends and participates in committees, task forces and meetings for coordination/facilitation of nursing activities at the unit, department division and hospital level.
7. Assures nursing department adherence to the division of nursing and unit specific structure standard/policies.
8. Actively participates in the development and implementation of standards in the division of nursing on both the generic and unit-specific levels.
9. Is responsible for adherence to standards and participates in hospital accrediting body accreditation process.
10. Actively participates in developing a PI program. Implements and evaluates PI activities.
11. Participates in design and implementing performance appraisal activities for a nursing department. Performs annual and on-going performance appraisal for unit employees based on job descriptions and unit-based performance standards.
12. Determines staffing patterns for the department and monitors these for compliance and adequacy.
13. Recruits, interviews, select and hire nursing employees and direct efforts at maintaining staff and effectiveness of activities.
14. Identifies learning needs/provides learning opportunities for development of staff skills. Maintains accurate records of events and evaluates effectiveness of activities.
15. Collaborates with the staff development coordinator in identifying and planning for staff learning needs.
16. Demonstrates ability to plan content and effectively deliver educational information of a clinical and managerial nature and regularly participates in direct learning activities for staff.
17. Actively participates in continued professional growth by continuing education and involvement in professional organizations.
18. Directs and facilitates communication between the Executive Director of Nursing and Assistant Executive Director of Inpatient Services, nursing support services, medical staff, ancillary services, and represents the department to the division of nursing.
19. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with physicians, department managers, and nursing management team/peers.
20. Demonstrates strong clinical and managerial leadership in directing and supporting staff while simultaneously ensuring integration of department and division level activities.
21. Demonstrates advanced level problem-solving skills and decision-making abilities.
22. Participates with the Executive Director of Nursing and Assistant Executive Director of Inpatient Services in overall strategic planning for the division of nursing in concert with the hospital plan objectives.
23. Plans for, designs and manages, directly and via delegation, systems/programs for meeting hospital, divisional, and departmental level objectives.
24. Participates in nursing research activities in the department and division and facilitates implementation of findings.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Excellent visual, hearing, speech/articulation abilities.
2. Physical capability plus stamina to carry out all psychomotor skills and strength/motion/movement required of area staff as defined in RN job description plus unit-based performance standards.
3. Physical strength to perform the following lifting tasks:
• Floor to waist - 40 pounds
• 14” to waist - 50 pounds
• Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds
• Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds
• Carry 40 pounds 30 feet
• Push 40 pounds/force 30 feet
• Pull 40 pounds/force 10 feet
• Carry 20 pounds away from body 30 feet
4. Emotional stability to deal with high prolonged stress of managing staff, patient care, and physical environment plus counseling/coaching staff plus providing disciplinary action plus positively interacting with medical staff and support services during times of stress and constant change.
5. Excellent verbal and written skills for high level communication within the division of nursing and interdisciplinary and administration meetings plus meeting high demands for developing written proposals, preparing budgets, writing evaluations, and developing standards and PI reports.
6. Strong intellectual abilities of critical thinking, comparative analysis, statistical control application, and decision making to provide direction to area staff and assist executive leadership with division of nursing program planning/execution/evaluation.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports to the Assistant Executive Director of Inpatient Services.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. Current Illinois Nursing license
2. Baccalaureate or Master’s Degree in Nursing preferred
3. Prior proven experience in obstetrics and expertise in management either in first line or shift supervisory work.

Category 1 – Maximal Risk – this job exposes you to potential blood, body fluids and tissues on a routine basis. It is recommended that you get the Hepatitis B vaccine.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Works in patient care areas where there are few discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise and the like.
2. Works with patients and may be exposed to contagious diseases or infectious materials, but potential for personal harm and injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions and equipment are used.
Salary : $90,000 - $110,000
