JOB TITLE: CNA/CMA/NA

DEPARTMENT: GIBSON CITY CLINIC, 222 N SANGAMON AVE, GIBSON CITY, IL 60936

HOURS & SHIFT REQUIREMENTS: Full time 36 hours weekly Monday-Thursday

GENERAL SUMMARY
The Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant or Nursing Assistant is a clinical professional staff member who performs duties to obtain clinical information/data, clinical CLIA waived lab testing, and testing on medical equipment, necessary for the medical office visit.
This assistance is under supervision of the Registered Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse, and the Physician/APN/FNP/PA.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Confidentiality is to be maintained at all times.

2. Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping room neat, clean, orderly, and proper equipment and supplies readily accessible for type of visit and or procedure.

3. Ensures all locks on cabinets in exam rooms and lab area with authorized access to are unlocked at beginning of office hours and are locked after office closing hours and after last patient has left.

4. Courteously greets all patients and visitors.

5. Greets patients appropriately and escort patients to exam rooms; performs, documents and reports vital signs and records height and weight.

6. Documents social/family/medical history, current complaint(s) with review of systems.

7. Working knowledge of computer applications.

8. Documents patient messages and forwards information to Physician, Nurse, NP, PA. Does not provide medical advice or recommend treatment.

9. Assists patients as needed with walking, walking devices, wheelchairs, transfers, undressing instructions, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.

10. Schedules referrals by phone to area physician offices and hospitals for tests and consults.

11. Assists patients in completion of the Pharmacy Assistance Program for respective provider.

12. Adheres to infection control/safety guidelines keeping exam and work areas neat, clean, and in orderly fashion.

13. Knowledge of proper use of medical equipment including stethoscope, EKG machine, NST machine, Spirometry device, ear washing equipment, speculums, scales, blood pressure cuff, and others as deemed appropriate for scope of practice.

14. Maintains and restocks exam rooms with needed supplies.

15. Monitors supplies, except medications, for outdating and disposes as needed.

16. Informs "orderer" of supplies that are needing to be ordered. The "orderer" is the person responsible for ordering supplies for the office. Does not order medications.

17. Perform venipunctures, drug screens, clia waved tests, and other medical equipment testing, as evidence of competency allows, as ordered by the Physician/Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant/Nurse.

18. Follows Infection Control fundamentals r/t: Standard Precautions, good hand washing, disposal of biohazardous materials, aseptic technique, disinfection of instruments/equipment, and preparations for autoclaving.

19. Helps answer incoming and outgoing patient telephone calls, triage or page calls, reply or forward electronic patient messages ensuring to record all final outcomes of patient calls into electronic patient chart.

20. Assists office coordinator/receptionist as needed by answering calls, scheduling appointments, greeting patients, opening/closing office for operation following office protocol, turning phone message on or off for phone operation, etc. as needed.

21. Checks over provider's appointment schedules for organizing patient flow.

22. Informs front desk office staff when provider is running behind. Informs patients when provider is running behind.

23. Performs routine laboratory tests and sample analyses in scope of practice (after receiving proper training from GAH for sign-off)

24. Stocks and checks inventory for lab supplies and reports items needed to lab for reorder.

25. Adheres to policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory bodies.

26. Obtains x-ray reports, emergency room notes, hospital notes, etc. as needed for follow-up visits for review by provider before rooming patient etc.

27. Sets up medical laboratory equipment and supplies as needed for blood draw(s) and or analysis if lab training completed and signed off by GAH designee.

28. Gathers spoiled laundry bag when receptacle is full for pickup. Laundry is picked up either Tuesday or Wednesday. If full call GAH Laundry @ ext. 2672 for pick-up.

29. Places clean laundry away in appropriate locations when received back from laundry department.

30. Performs venipunctures-only if employee has certification/training.

31. Cleans instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control as instructed by GAH protocols if training has been completed and signed off by GAH designee.

32. Pre-soaks, cleans, dries, and packages surgical instruments according to proper protocol and places in appropriate container to be sent for sterilization thru GAH courier if training has been completed and signed off by GAH designee.

33. Collects blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, completes order requisitions and/or other forms for submitting specimens, logs the specimens, and prepares them for testing and/or sending with GAH lab courier or outside lab facility.

34. Checks bathroom window lab specimen path-thru window periodically throughout the day as appropriate and necessary and at the end of each day to ensure specimens are not left in the window.

35. Responds appropriately to emergency codes; alerting appropriate staff along with immediate supervisors immediately.

36. Discards all trash in regular trash receptacles including exam rooms, basement, waiting room, office areas, lab, etc. using proper personal protection equipment when handling at end of each office day or if needed before if full.

37. Removes filled biohazard bags as well as removes any full sharps containers to biohazard closet if certified in biohazard waste removal and replaces with new red bags or new approved sharps containers (if completed training & certification).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Basic lifting/bending: Boxes, medical equipment, patient care.

2. Basic twisting, turning: During above functions.

3. Basic vigorous walking: Daily functions of transferring patients to care area during a fast paced, busy clinic.

4. Basic prolonged standing: During daily functions at nursing workstations.

5. Visual acuity to observe patients for assessment and data collection, to use manual documentation tools.

6. Auditory acuity to hear patient's verbal communication and gather data using auscultatory skills.

7. Emotional stability conductive to dealing with patients, and family members.

8. Strength to perform the following lifting tasks:

Floor to waist - 40 pounds
14" to waist - 50 pounds
Waist to shoulder - 20 pounds
Shoulder to overhead - 10 pounds
Carry 40 pounds for 30 feet
Push 40 pounds/force for 30 feet
Pull 40 pounds/force for 10 feet

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

Reports to the Office Manager.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Must be competencied by laboratory supervisor/designee for all CLIA waived testing, venipunctures, drug screens, and medical equipment testing and Oriented by RN/LPN according to any and all job skills required to perform said duties, in the clinic environment.

2. Current BLS certification or will achieve within six months of hire.

3. Must be able to follow directions and have a working knowledge of computer applications.

4. If certified, maintains certification in Department of Transportation (DOT) and non-DOT drug screening procedures.

INFECTION EXPOSURE RISK LEVEL
Category 1 - Maximal Risk - this job exposes you to potential blood, body fluids and tissues on a routine basis. It is recommended that you get the Hepatitis B vaccine

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. 1. Works in patient care areas where there are few discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise, and the like.

2. Works with patients and may be exposed to contagious diseases or infectious materials but potential for personal harm and injury is limited when proper safety and health precautions and equipment are used
