Special Educator – Paraprofessional (1:1 Student Aide)

General Summary
Special education paraprofessionals assist students with special needs under the direction of a certified teacher. Paraprofessionals typically work in an inclusionary setting (least restrictive environment). This role supports students’ academic, physical, emotional, and behavioral needs while promoting dignity, independence, and positive relationships.
Basic Function / Purpose
- Work 1:1 with a student with special needs in an inclusive classroom setting
- Assist, support, and collaborate with teachers, administrators, and multidisciplinary team members to deliver a high-quality instructional program
- Provide direct personal care assistance, including toileting, diapering, changing, and physical support/lifting, as required by the student’s needs
- Support students with behavioral, emotional, and sensory needs, including implementing behavior plans and assisting with de-escalation strategies
- Promote student independence, dignity, safety, and emotional well-being while supporting academic and functional skill development
Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance during assigned work hours
- Follow daily schedules and adjust to assignment or schedule changes as needed
- Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce skills and learning introduced by the teacher
- Provide additional support to students with exceptionalities, including physical, developmental, emotional, and behavioral needs, as well as students with 504 Plans
- Assist the supervising teacher in implementing IEP goals and supporting students in an integrated setting
- Support students with full-scale PCA needs, including toileting, diapering, changing, physical assistance/lifting, and behavioral support, including de-escalation when needed
- Assist with non-instructional classroom duties such as snack time, toileting routines, class transitions, and clothing changes
- Prepare instructional materials and equipment, including locating, copying, collating, distributing, and organizing materials
- Serve as a resource and support for substitute teachers
- Maintain cooperative working relationships with principals, teachers, staff, students, parents, and the school community
- Participate in professional learning activities and staff development opportunities provided by the district
- Demonstrate flexibility, professionalism, and a positive attitude toward work assignments
