Position Summary
The Resident Engineer is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the successful management of civil construction projects. Reporting directly to the Project Manager, this role involves supervising inspection teams, conducting field inspections, managing documentation, and providing technical guidance and quality assurance. The Resident Engineer will lead coordination with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure compliance with contract documents, building codes, and regulatory requirements. This position requires strong client management, extensive project oversight, and a hands-on approach to jobsite activities.

Position Summary

Duties And Responsibilities

- Oversee construction projects, including field activities, studies, design reviews, and office services during construction.
- Coordinate extensively with clients and contractors by attending and leading meetings, providing technical guidance, and ensuring clear communication across jobsite activities.
- Monitor contractor progress, including use of approved materials and equipment, and schedule materials testing.
- Conduct field inspections to verify compliance with SWPPP, building and safety codes, environmental documents, and other regulations.
- Review and respond to RFIs, submittals, change orders, and contractor correspondence.
- Prepare independent cost estimates for change orders and negotiate with contractors.
- Document construction progress through detailed daily reports and maintain comprehensive project files.
- Prepare and process change orders while keeping tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, contingency balances, and material quantities.
- Lead weekly progress meetings and prepare meeting summaries.
- Develop clear written documents such as proposals, reports, correspondence, and performance evaluations.
- Conduct quantity take-offs and review materials testing data.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) License in California (required).
- Minimum of 3 years working in construction project management or as a Resident Engineer with public agencies.
- CCM and PMP Certifications are preferred.
- Strong communication, verbal and written, is required.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, project management software, scheduling tools, and SharePoint.
- Strong knowledge of Caltrans standards, specifications, and plans.
- Ability to read and interpret contract drawings and technical documents.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong project management and leadership abilities.
