About the Role:
We’re looking for a highly experienced Senior Staff Software Engineer to lead the modernization of our life insurance policy administration systems. This role requires a strong background in Agile software engineering, with deep hands-on expertise in mainframe technologies and COBOL development.
You’ll own the architecture and evolution of our core policy administration platform, guiding a team of engineers and driving transformation from batch-based legacy systems to real-time, customer-centric solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead architecture and development of mainframe-based life insurance systems, best practices and standards.
- Provide technical direction to a team of 15–20 engineers.
- Drive modernization efforts using technologies like DB2, z/OS Connect, IBM MQ, and Web UI frameworks.
- Collaborate across departments to introduce scalable, compliant, and innovative solutions.
- Manage Agile delivery processes and sprint planning.
- Support hiring and mentoring of engineering talent.
Required Qualifications:
✅ 15 years of Agile software engineering experience
✅ 10 years of leadership in software development
✅ Extensive hands-on experience with COBOL and mainframe systems (CICS, IMS, VSAM, JCL)
✅ Proven success in large-scale system modernization and integration
✅Authored or has contributed authoring JCL (job control language) or COBOL coding standards
✅Proven experience, use of COBOL version standards, intrinsic functions and coding best practices
✅ Strong understanding of life insurance policy administration systems
✅ Familiarity with tools like Docker, GIT, Maven, Jenkins, JIRA preferred
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with MicroFocus COBOL, DB2, z/OS Connect, IBM MQ
- Knowledge of front-end technologies (JavaScript, Angular, HTML/CSS)
- Strategic thinker with a passion for innovation and continuous improvement
