Position Summary
The Instructional Paraprofessional supports student learning by working under the direction of a certified teacher to provide instructional, academic, and behavioral support to students in whole-group, small-group, and individual settings. The paraprofessional plays a critical role in implementing classroom routines, reinforcing instruction, and supporting an inclusive, student-centered learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Paraprofessionals may be assigned to classrooms, grade levels, or specific students and are expected to:
•Support implementation of teacher-led instruction by reinforcing lessons, directions, and learning objectives
•Provide targeted support to students during whole-class instruction, small-group work, and independent practice
•Assist students with academic tasks aligned to curriculum, including reading, writing, mathematics, and content-area learning
•Support students’ engagement, attention, and participation using established classroom routines and behavioral expectations
•Work with multiple students as directed by the classroom teacher, not exclusively with one student unless specified by assignment
•Follow the instructional plans, strategies, and directions of the classroom teacher and related service providers
•Support inclusive practices for students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and students requiring additional academic or behavioral support
•Assist with data collection, progress monitoring, and documentation as directed
•Help maintain a safe, respectful, and orderly learning environment
•Communicate professionally and appropriately with teachers, support staff, and administrators
•Maintain confidentiality regarding student information at all times
Additional Responsibilities
•Assist with student transitions, arrival and dismissal, and classroom routines as assigned
•Support lunch, recess, or brief coverage needs when required and assigned by administration
•Participate in required professional development, training sessions, and staff meetings
•Perform other related duties as assigned, consistent with the role of an instructional paraprofessional
Qualifications
•High school diploma or equivalent required
•Associate’s degree or college coursework preferred
•Candidates without a college degree must meet one of the following requirements:
oPass a district- or state-approved paraprofessional assessment (e.g., ParaPro Assessment), or
oBe enrolled in, or commit to enrolling in, a district-approved pathway toward paraprofessional certification, in accordance with Lawrence Public Schools and Massachusetts DESE requirements
•Experience working with children in an educational setting preferred
•Ability to work collaboratively under the direction of a certified teacher
•Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
•Commitment to equity, inclusion, and supporting diverse learners
Work Environment
•Primarily classroom-based
•May support students with academic, behavioral, or social-emotional needs
•Requires active engagement with students throughout the school day, including standing, walking, and movement between classrooms
