Position Summary Guilmette Middle School, a diverse and caring community serving students in grades 5–8, seeks a passionate and highly effective 6th Grade English Language Arts Teacher to provide rigorous, engaging, and standards-aligned literacy instruction. The ideal candidate believes that every student is capable of reading, writing, thinking, and communicating at high levels. The teacher will create a classroom in which students engage deeply with grade-level texts, participate in meaningful academic discourse, develop their ideas through writing, and build the independence and confidence necessary to become thoughtful readers, writers, and learners. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instruction and Student Learning •Plan and deliver rigorous, standards-aligned instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. •Engage students in the close reading and analysis of complex literary and informational texts. •Provide frequent opportunities for students to write for a variety of purposes, audiences, and genres. •Facilitate purposeful academic discourse that requires students to explain their thinking, support ideas with evidence, and respond thoughtfully to the perspectives of others. •Design and deliver culturally responsive lessons that reflect students’ identities, experiences, and assets while maintaining high academic expectations for all learners. •Use clear learning objectives, success criteria, modeling, questioning, and checks for understanding to guide instruction. •Provide explicit instruction in vocabulary, comprehension, written expression, grammar, and language development. •Maintain a classroom environment that promotes intellectual curiosity, respectful discussion, productive struggle, and increasing student independence. Assessment and Responsive Instruction •Use formative and summative assessment data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction. •Analyze student work to identify strengths, misconceptions, and instructional next steps. •Provide students with timely, specific, and actionable feedback. •Differentiate instruction and provide appropriate scaffolds while maintaining access to grade-level standards and tasks. •Collaborate with special education teachers, multilingual learner educators, interventionists, and other specialists to meet the needs of all students. •Support multilingual learners in developing both academic language and grade-level literacy skills. Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities •Collaborate with grade-level and content-area colleagues to plan instruction, examine student work, and respond to student learning needs. •Participate actively in common planning, professional learning, coaching, and schoolwide instructional initiatives. •Communicate consistently and respectfully with students, families, colleagues, and school leadership. •Establish clear, consistent classroom routines and expectations that support a safe, inclusive, and academically focused learning environment. •Build strong relationships with students while maintaining appropriate structure, accountability, and high expectations. •Contribute positively to the Guilmette Middle School community and support the academic, social, and emotional growth of all students. •Perform additional responsibilities consistent with the role of a classroom teacher. Qualifications Required •Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. •Appropriate Massachusetts educator license or eligibility for licensure in English at the middle school level. •Sheltered English Immersion endorsement or eligibility to obtain the endorsement. •Demonstrated knowledge of standards-based English Language Arts instruction. •Commitment to providing equitable access to rigorous learning for students with diverse academic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds. •Strong communication, organization, collaboration, and classroom-management skills. Preferred •Experience teaching English Language Arts at the middle school level. •Experience supporting multilingual learners and students with disabilities in inclusive classrooms. •Knowledge of evidence-based literacy practices and adolescent literacy development. •Experience using student data and student work to inform instructional decisions. •Ability to contribute to a collaborative, reflective, and improvement-focused professional culture.
