Investment Analyst - Metals & Mining

Gerald Group
Stamford, CT Full Time
POSTED ON 7/28/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 8/26/2026
About The Company

Gerald Group is one of the world’s oldest and largest commodity trading companies focused on the merchanting of non-ferrous, ferrous, precious metals. For over six decades, we have distinguished ourselves as leading market specialists in the merchanting of all forms of refined metals and raw materials around the world. We take pride in our well-earned reputation as a dedicated and trusted partner to top-tier miners and processors, industrial consumers, and major financial institutions. We are boldly continuing this tradition as we advance a more sustainable metals trade. Founded in the United States, our main trading office is in Stamford, Connecticut. Our world-wide operations are supported by trading hubs and offices in Geneva, Shanghai, Dubai, and other locations. In addition to our merchanting business, our mining assets include the Marampa Mines iron ore mine in Sierra Leone, and the Soremi copper and zinc mine in the Republic of Congo.

Position Summary

Gerald Group is seeking an Investment Analyst to support the evaluation, execution and ongoing management of investments, financing transactions and offtake opportunities across the Group's global portfolio. The successful candidate will combine a technical understanding of mining and resource projects with strong financial modelling, valuation and analytical skills.

This is a hands-on principal investing role. The Analyst will work across the full life cycle of a transaction, from origination and diligence through structuring, execution and post-investment asset management, with direct exposure to senior management and regular travel to operations.

The Opportunity

  • Principal capital, not advisory. Gerald invests its own balance sheet, so analysis leads directly to investment decisions and to assets the Group owns and operates.
  • End-to-end ownership. The Analyst runs workstreams from screening through to execution and portfolio oversight, rather than a single slice of a process.
  • Physical and financial exposure. The role spans mine economics, capital structures, offtake and trading, providing a view of the commodity chain that is difficult to obtain elsewhere.
  • Direct visibility. Work product is presented to senior management, the Investment Committee and the Board.
  • Operating exposure. Time on site alongside portfolio-company management builds a practical understanding of how mines actually run.

Key Responsibilities

Investment Analysis and Financial Modelling:

  • Build and review detailed life-of-mine financial models covering production, operating cost, capital expenditure, working capital, taxation and cash flow.
  • Perform NAV and DCF valuations for development-stage and operating assets, and assess project economics including NPV, IRR, payback, funding requirements and downside cases.
  • Run sensitivities across price decks, grade, recovery, production, operating cost and capital expenditure.
  • Evaluate capital structures across debt, equity, prepayment, streaming, royalty and offtake financing, including dilution, debt capacity, repayment profiles, covenant headroom and returns.

Due Diligence And Transaction Execution

  • Lead financial, commercial and technical due diligence on investment and trading opportunities, identifying key risks, information gaps and value-creation levers.
  • Review geological, mining, metallurgical, processing and infrastructure information with support from internal and external technical specialists.
  • Support structuring, negotiation and execution, including security, collateral, hedging, offtake, governance and risk-mitigation arrangements.
  • Prepare investment memoranda, presentations and recommendations for senior management, the Investment Committee and the Board.
  • Coordinate with traders, operators, consultants, financial institutions, legal advisers and other external stakeholders.

Portfolio Management

  • Monitor the technical, operational and financial performance of portfolio companies against budgets, mine plans and investment-case assumptions.
  • Support annual budgeting, forecasting, strategic planning and performance-improvement initiatives.
  • Work directly with portfolio-company management teams and operational personnel.
  • Spend extended periods embedded at portfolio companies and mining operations when required.

Market And Opportunity Assessment

  • Research commodity markets, mining companies, projects, jurisdictions and industry trends.
  • Support the screening and origination of investment, financing and offtake opportunities.
  • Work with the trading and business-development teams to evaluate strategic fit and commercial value.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, Geology, Mineral Processing, Finance, Economics or another relevant discipline.
  • Approximately 2-4 years of relevant experience in mining investment banking, private equity, corporate development, equity research, project finance, consulting or mining operations. Title and level will be set to reflect experience.
  • Strong financial modelling skills, including NAV and DCF valuation of mining or resource assets and experience building or reviewing life-of-mine models.
  • Ability to read mining technical reports, resource and reserve statements, production schedules, recoveries, operating costs and capital expenditure, and to identify the key commercial and technical drivers of an investment.
  • Ability to convert complex technical and financial information into concise written recommendations for senior management. Advanced Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented and comfortable working independently across different cultures, jurisdictions and operating environments.

Preferred

  • A technical degree combined with solid finance and accounting experience.
  • Familiarity with prepayment, streaming, royalty and offtake financing structures.
  • Prior time spent at operating mine sites.
  • Additional languages, particularly French, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic.

Location and Travel:

  • Based in Stamford, CT On-office.
  • Travel of approximately 25-30%, particularly during the first several years, including trips of three to four weeks.
  • Willing and able to work from mining and processing sites in remote and developing-market jurisdictions, and to adapt to mine-site accommodation and operating environments.
