Job Description

CIPHER’s Command and Control Mission Assurance Division (C2MA) assesses the security of and develops cyber-resilient C4ISR systems for a variety of government, DoD, and Critical Infrastructure sponsors. The division designs, tests, and fields new technologies and architectures to secure critical systems that are depended on for numerous missions.

Cipher's C2MA (Command and Control Mission Assurance) division within the Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research Laboratory (CIPHER) seeks a student assistant/researcher for the Spring 2026 semester to support teams that are developing new methods, technologies, and systems to secure mission critical systems in a variety of government, DoD, and Critical Infrastructure environments. Successful candidates will need to be able to analyze large problems and break them down into smaller, achievable tasks. Candidates will need to be able to learn new concepts, methods, and technologies quickly to support overall project and system development goals. Desired candidates should have a broad set of academic or professional experience across computer science, cybersecurity, programming, algorithm development, and AI/Machine Learning. Selected candidates will be working on a variety of tasks such building neural networks, developing anomaly detection algorithms, etc. for the purposes of detecting errant or malicious behavior in systems.

Working alone and alongside other students to support long-term project goals is expected. Strong written communication skills are a must.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Student Assistant

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a concentration in Cybersecurity, Intelligence, & Privacy
  • Must be registered for at least 6 credit hours with your university
  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in 1 or more programming languages
  • Experience with AI/Machine Learning concepts, methods, models, and tools (neural networks, anomaly detection, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Cybersecurity concepts and principles
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Familiarity with Windows, Linux, or Mac and open-source tools
  • Task / team leadership experience
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
