Job Description

Work with our research engineers to develop adaptive wireless communications systems. Have you ever wanted to work in advanced wireless communications areas such as 5G, IoT, or Wi-Fi? As a student assistant, you will get to learn skills in these areas to propel your career forward. If you have a good handle on the basics of computer science and are good at learning new things, then you already have the basic knowledge to get started here.

Your tasks will include: develop software for 5G, embedded systems, and servers. Programming and testing software. Embedded software and sensor interfacing. Work in an agile process using Atlassian tools. Work on documentation and designs.

The Communications Systems and Spectrum Division (CSSD) within the Information and Communications Lab (ICL) is seeking a Computer Science Student Assistant starting Spring 2026. CSSD researches and develops military-grade wireless communications systems. CSSD fuses multiple technologies including software-defined radios, FPGA, 5G circuit board design, 3D printing and UAVs to solve our customer’s most challenging problems.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Student Assistant

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering
  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Must be registered for at least 6 credit hours with your university
  • Experience in 1 or more programming languages (Python, MATLAB, or C preferred)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Linux and open-source tools
  • Familiarity with Linux networking tools like ping, traceroute, etc.
  • Basic working understanding of TCP/IP and subnetting
  • Experience with raspberry pi or similar small computers
  • Experience with databases (SQL type preferred)
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas

16-20 hours per week

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
