Project/Unit Description

The Human Performance Branch (HPB) in the Human Centered Engineering Division is focused on qualitative and quantitative modeling and real-time prediction of applied Human Factors and Cognitive Psychology issues involving neurology, physiology, and behavior of human-system interactions. HPB holds specific interest and expertise in the cognitive states of trust, situation awareness, workload, bias, and cognition. HPB personnel apply this expertise to assist in guiding design and human centered requirements in applied settings that include, but are not limited to Human-AI Teaming, Human-Robot Teaming, User Interface Design/Usability (UI/UX), and autonomy applications, accomplishing this through use of experimental design, human-subjects research, and data analytics.

Job Purpose

Computational social scientists engage, lead, and direct teams in interdisciplinary research projects to meet sponsor objectives leveraging big data streaming analytics on real-time data to provide social insights to sponsors. Qualitative and quantitative research performed spans disciplines of cognitive science, computer science, machine learning, natural language processing, natural language understanding, psychology, sociology, economics, international relations, online social networks, network science, software prototyping, software engineering, design of research experiments, data analytics, open source sensor integration, communication sciences, information sciences, cultural sciences, cyber-social security, national security, information warfare, and information influence campaigns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform signal processing tasks with more limited direction from supervisor.
  • Develop expertise in specific areas.
  • Contribute to white papers and proposals with supporting background or data analysis.
  • Contribute to technical reports/presentations of projects, journal articles, and conference presentations.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited degree program relevant to this position will be considered. The candidate must have a graduation date of no later than August 2026.
  • Programming proficiency in Python, SPSS, R
  • Advanced Statistical Analysis Experience.
  • Proven understanding (through job history, education, and / or publication history) of human cognitive states (i.e., trust, workload, situation awareness, bias).
  • Predictive Modeling Experience.
  • Model Evaluation Experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance.
  • Experience working within DoW contexts.
  • User Interface/Usability (UI/UX) Experience.
  • Programming proficiency in SQL, JavaScript, and/or other programming languages.

Travel Requirements

  • 10% - 25% travel.

Education and Length of Experience

This position vacancy is an open-rank announcement. The final job offer will be dependent on candidate qualifications in alignment with Research Faculty Extension Professional ranks as outlined in section 3.2.1 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook

  • 0 years of related experience with a Masters’ degree in Human Factors Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, or Applied Psychology.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
