Industrial Maintenance Technician

Job Summary
The Industrial Maintenance Technician is responsible for the safe maintenance, repair, installation, and modification of machinery and equipment within an industrial or manufacturing environment. A key component of this role involves performing skilled welding and fabrication tasks to create custom parts, repair structural components, and support continuous improvement projects. The primary objective is to minimize production downtime and maximize the lifespan and efficiency of all facility equipment.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines according to established schedules and manufacturer specifications.
  • Troubleshooting and Repair: Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic problems using precision measuring and testing instruments, observation, and technical manuals.
  • Installation and Setup: Install new production equipment and machinery, including alignment and calibration, following blueprints, diagrams, and schematic drawings.
  • Welding and Fabrication:
    • Perform various welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick) on different materials, including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, to repair equipment and structural components.
    • Fabricate custom machine parts, guards, brackets, and fixtures from raw materials using saws, shears, brakes, grinders, and other shop equipment.
    • Interpret blueprints and engineering drawings to plan layouts, determine the appropriate welding method, and produce precise measurements and cuts.
    • Modify existing equipment and structures to improve functionality, safety, or production line efficiency.
  • Documentation and Inventory: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). Monitor and manage spare parts inventories and place orders for needed supplies.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and regulations, including OSHA standards, fire safety protocols, and lock-out/tag-out procedures, to maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Collaboration and Training: Communicate effectively with the production team and management regarding equipment status. Train production workers on routine preventative maintenance techniques and machine safety.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. An Associate degree or technical certification in industrial maintenance, welding technology, or a related trade is preferred.
  • Experience: 5 years proven experience as an industrial maintenance technician or in a similar role, with a strong background in both industrial mechanics/electrics and professional welding/fabrication.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    • In-depth knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
    • Proficiency in common welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick) and familiarity with safe operation of fabrication equipment (grinders, drill presses, saws, etc.).
    • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering fabrication drawings.
    • Familiarity with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and industrial control systems is often preferred.
    • Proficiency with various hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers), and diagnostic equipment.
  • Soft Skills and Abilities:
    • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
    • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
    • Physical stamina and strength for lifting heavy objects and working in various physical conditions (e.g., climbing, bending, standing for extended periods).
    • Good communication skills for effective collaboration and reporting.

    Work Environment

Industrial Maintenance Technicians typically work in manufacturing plants, factories, and other industrial facilities. The environment can be noisy and may require working in confined spaces, at heights, or in varying temperatures. They often need to be available for emergency breakdowns and may work rotating shifts or be on-call.
