The Episcopal Chaplain advances this mission in collaboration with Protestant Chaplaincy staff and colleagues of other religious traditions, with a focus on undergraduate, graduate and professional school students. The Episcopal Chaplain is responsible for providing pastoral presence and support, reflective programming and retreats, sacramental religious services and pastoral counseling. In order to actualize Campus Ministry’s Vision, the Episcopal Chaplain develops and maintains campus partnerships around the intellectual, social and spiritual formation of students.

The Episcopal Chaplain contributes to the ecumenical and interreligious ministry environment of Campus Ministry and support the varieties of theological expression in the Protestant community, with a particular focus on those of the Anglican Communion and those churches in fellowship with the Episcopal Church. This position maintains mutually supportive and collaborative relationships with local Episcopal and Lutheran churches and support student participation in local churches. This position recognizes and affirm the Catholic identity, Jesuit mission and Ignatian spiritual tradition of the university, and cultivate a culture of respectful dialogue and collaboration among diverse students and staff.

This is a part-time position averaging 20 hours per week.

Work Interactions

The Episcopal Chaplain reports to the Managing Director or their designee. They work in close collaboration with other Protestant and non-Protestant chaplains at the university to minister to the diverse spiritual needs of the community. They contribute to the culture of belonging, and work intentionally to advance Campus Ministry’s racial justice goals. They work with faculty, administrators and undergraduate and graduate student leaders to promote the formation and holistic wellbeing of students. They serve as a primary spiritual resource to the campus community as well as engaging alumni and donors on behalf of the university.

The Episcopal Chaplain represents the university at campus ceremonies and events. They have a significant impact on the spiritual lives of students, faculty and staff; the reputation of Campus Ministry as a partner in the work of student formation; and the reputation of the university.

Requirements And Qualifications

  • Master of Divinity from accredited graduate theological school
  • Clinical Pastoral Education or equivalent supervised ministry experience
  • Three years’ relevant ministry experience, including preaching/worship leadership, program planning and pastoral counseling
  • Ordination as an Episcopal priest, licensed in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, capable of serving diverse denominational, racial/ethnic, and religious constituencies.
  • Ability to work creatively and collegially with chaplains, faculty and staff of other Christian and non-Christian religious traditions
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail; self-direction and ability to manage projects, set priorities, and navigate complex situations, both pastoral and organizational.
  • Requires regular evening and weekend hours, including Sunday services

Pay Range

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$47,586.00 - $87,558.13

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
