What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tour Guide position at George Washington Masonic National Memorial?
The George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia, is seeking to fill the position of Tour Guide/ Event Team Member. The Memorial is a National Historic Landmark and one of the region's most memorable museums. Tours are one hour in length, and explore the many rooms and galleries of the museum while explaining important aspects of George Washington's history and the American Masonic heritage. A written script will be used for learning the vital information each tour guide needs to effectively and efficiently convey, therefore, memory skills are important. Also essential are strong customer service skills, comfort while speaking before small and large groups, and POS skills. The shift is 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a half hour lunch break.
The Memorial is open Friday through Sunday. The Memorial is a sought-after venue for an array of event types, from weddings to conferences to dance recitals to movie filmings, etc. Shifts assisting before, during and after events may become available to qualified team members. Tour guides work under the direct supervision of the Tour Manager.
The Memorial is walking distance from the King Street Metro, which serves the blue and yellow lines.
The work duties and expectations of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Tour Guide Responsibilities:
- Greeting and welcoming guests to the Memorial.
- Responding to customer inquiries in person and over the phone.
- Conduct multiple tours throughout the day.
- Using POS to transact sales of admission, check in guests, etc.
- Opening the exhibits prior to tours and closing the exhibits after closing.
- Scheduling group visits.
- Familiarizing yourself on the subjects of George Washington, Freemasonry, the layout and history of the City of Alexandria, and other closely related subjects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Tour Guide Requirements:
- High school diploma; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Weekend availability required.
- Proficiency in multiple languages in addition to English is preferred.
- Prior experience as a tour guide is advantageous.
- Capacity to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Adherence to prescribed safety codes.
- Adherence to mandated dress code.
- Excellent communication skills with a knack for storytelling.
- Outstanding organizational, time management, and improvisational skills.
- Ability to work during and on weekends, as well as some holidays.
