About The Position
The primary purpose of the Access Control and IT Technician is to provide maintenance to the University’s CCTV equipment and access control hardware to ensure the proper operation of all components of the systems are functional (including door contacts, request to exit devices, readers, the actual lock, power supplies, encoders, network connections, and cameras). This also includes maintenance of network connectivity and software settings for all connected hardware, ensuring proper documentation of work completed and inventory used.

Responsibilities
Repairs and installs access control, alarm, and CCTV systems
- Provides and coordinates repairs and maintenance of technical equipment;
- Troubleshoots and provides end-user technical support for access control, alarm, and CCTV systems;
- Performs timely installations of University card access, alarm, and CCTV system installations to include running, pulling, terminating, and splicing cable as well as mounting system control panels and related components both mechanical and electronic; and
- Trains peers and colleagues as directed by supervisor.
- Ensures continuity and accuracy of contracted access control installs; and
- Maintains appropriate records and details of work done and time spent in the appropriate work order system;
- Conducts all work in a timely manner in accordance with established GMU Access Control standards and policies with a focus on accuracy, customer service, and maintaining security;
- Reviews and maintains a working knowledge of all department policies, as well as laws and University policies pertaining to all relevant access control, alarm, and CCTV usage and installation best practices and policies;
- Follows Standard Operating Procedures and other department, University, and state policies;
- Complies with state, University, and department leave policies; and
- Demonstrates punctuality and reports on time for all work-related functions to include training, meetings, and other duties.
- Plans, schedules, assigns, and prioritizes projects and assignments in consultation with the Physical Security IT Manager or designee;
- Effectively communicates status of assignments to appropriate personnel, working cooperatively to schedule projects and assignments in accordance with established procedures and special operational priorities;
- Instructs staff in work procedures;
- Evaluates products and services and provides recommendations on available technology to best serve the customer or department; and
- Coordinates projects as assigned related to acquisition and integration of software programs and technical equipment.
- Maintains working relationship with University information technology personnel; and
- Provides end-user technical support to troubleshoot and rectify issues when requested.
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Demonstrated experience working with network connectivity issues and/or experience with installation and repair of alarm, card access, or CCTV systems;
- Knowledge of access control systems and software;
- Skill in providing effective customer service, including analysis of issues through independent judgement and decision making; ability to develop strategies to improve customer service and benefits process efficiency;
- Skill in effective and respectful verbal, written, and interpersonal communication; ability to concisely report solutions; ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when communicating with individuals at all levels of the organization;
- Ability to learn complex software systems;
- Ability to diagnose network connectivity issues;
- Ability to work effectively with others both in the department and to external colleagues; ability to work as a single unit and work through technical issues using best industry practices and current knowledge; and
- Ability to demonstrate significant attention to detail and perform work with a high degree of accuracy.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field;
- RS2, Exacq, and Assa Abloy installer certification, or ability to obtain such certifications; and
- Experience working in higher education.
