About the Department:

The Kellar Institute’s objective is to improve the lives and productivity of persons with disabilities. The purpose of the AIM-VA project is to provide accessible instructional materials for K-12 students in the state of Virginia with print disabilities.

About the Position:

The Training and Technical Assistance Specialist supports the effective implementation and use of accessible instructional materials (AIM) and related assistive technology for K–12 students with IEPs and print disabilities across Virginia. The position provides statewide training and technical assistance to school divisions on ordering AIM, adding and managing students within the AIM system, and using AIM in the classroom. Training and support are delivered through in-person and virtual formats to promote access to accessible instructional materials.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides training support for access and implementation of accessible instructional materials (AIM) to improve student performance. Develops training materials such as handouts, blogs, and portal support links, as well as delivers training sessions through face-to-face, webinar, and video conferencing presentations to support school divisions and their digital rights managers (DRMs) in using the AIM-VA ordering portal, website, and digital formats. Attends state conferences to exhibit and present to disseminate AIM-VA information;
  • Provides technical support to troubleshoot and resolve issues with AIM implementation. Maintains a knowledge base of VA school hardware (e.g., computers, phones, Chromebooks, and dedicated devices). Stays current with related assistive technology software/apps and devices (e.g., text-to-speech programs, screen readers, magnification applications, and annotation tools) and their use on multiple devices. Provides technical assistance through phone calls, emails, and help desk requests;
  • Oversees tasks as requested/assigned by the supervisor in support of production, training, marketing and technical assistance, including conferences and exhibitions, and efforts for the AIM-VA project; and
  • Develops and updates the training/technical assistance documentation provided through the AIM-VA portal.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Generally, a minimum of one (1) year of experience working with the needs of students with disabilities in an educational setting, which may include K–12 or postsecondary (college/university) environments;
  • Knowledge of federal and state special education accessibility standards and requirements related to accessible instructional materials (AIM);
  • Knowledge of students with print-related disabilities and the instructional use of accessible instructional materials in reading;
  • Knowledge of accessible educational materials (AEM) and related assistive technology software, applications, and devices (e.g., text-to-speech programs, screen readers, magnification applications, and annotation tools);
  • Knowledge of the use of assistive technology tools across multiple platforms (e.g., iOS mobile devices, Chromebooks, PCs, Macs, and Android devices);
  • Skill in the use of standard productivity software (e.g., Microsoft, Adobe, and Google applications);
  • Ability to quickly learn and independently use new software tools and technologies;
  • Strong skill in verbal and written communication, including the ability to deliver effective presentations and provide technical information to varied audiences and across platforms;
  • Ability to organize work effectively, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and maintain attention to detail; and
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as a key member of the AIM-VA team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field;
  • Generally, three (3) or more years of experience working with the needs of students with disabilities in educational settings; and
  • Knowledge of students with print-related disabilities, preferably in K–12 educational settings.
