Job Title: Instrument Operator

GeoPoint is a land surveying company with multiple locations, specializing in land development, geomatics, geospatial mapping, commercial surveys, and subsurface utility engineering. We are seeking an experienced Instrument Operator to join the team!

Summary/Objective:

The Instrument Operator is responsible for assisting in the setup and operation of surveying instruments, supporting the survey team in data collection, and ensuring the accuracy of field measurements. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals looking to start their career in geomatics and surveying, offering hands-on experience and opportunities for growth.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Load and unload the survey vehicle with equipment and supplies, including bundles of wooden hubs and lathes, concrete monuments, heavy boxed instruments, and large water coolers.
  • Assist with filling the survey vehicle with gas, checking fluid levels such as water and oil, checking tire pressure, and inspecting for mechanical problems such as broken headlights and taillights.
  • Carry items including bundles of hubs and lathes, concrete monuments, and equipment through woods, brush, mud, water, and swamps to various points on the job site. This may involve lengthy periods of walking up to one-half mile from the survey vehicle.
  • Assist in setting up and calibrating surveying instruments such as total stations, GPS equipment, and levels.
  • Operate surveying instruments to measure and collect data on specific points for mapping and construction purposes.
  • Perform stakeout tasks, including pounding stakes into the ground and marking locations as directed by the Surveyor or Party Chief.
  • Use tools such as machetes to clear brush and foliage to provide an unobstructed view for the survey instruments.
  • Provide technical support to the survey team by ensuring instruments are properly maintained and calibrated.
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures during field operations to ensure a safe working environment.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic mechanical skills for vehicle maintenance.
  • Experience with surveying instruments and tools is a plus.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and challenging terrains.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Good communication skills to interact effectively with team members.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Work requires using a machete, shovel and sledgehammer, or other appropriate tools. 
  • Lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. over rough terrain may be required.  
  • Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate various pieces of field equipment. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms, speak, and hear.  
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell.  
  • Able to get in and out of vehicle multiple times a day.  
  • Drive 30 to 200 miles daily.  
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • Due to the outdoor environment, there is potential exposure to natural hazards.
  • It is required to work outside in all types of weather conditions, possibly for extended periods of time. 
  • The terrain may be rough, steep, wet, or swampy. Vegetation may be dense, and insects, snakes, or animals may be encountered. 
  • Desk/Workstation may be located in a confined area. 
  • Able to work overtime and some weekends. 
  • Able to work well in a team environment as well as being self-motivated and driven.

Travel:

  • Some travel may be required.

Schedule:

  • Must be able to start the workday promptly @ 6:30 AM and be available until 6:00 PM if required.
  • Overtime is mandatory.

Availability:

  • Able to work 40–65 hours per week, including evenings and weekends if required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
