Job Title: Laboratory Technician / Technical Supervisor
Job Summary
Genesis Medical Group is seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Technician / Technical Supervisor to support and oversee daily operations in our high-volume clinical laboratory serving the Tomball/Woodlands area.
This hybrid role combines bench-level laboratory testing with technical supervision, including workflow oversight, quality control management, staff guidance, and regulatory compliance support. The ideal candidate is an experienced laboratory professional capable of performing complex testing while also ensuring operational efficiency and maintaining compliance with CLIA, COLA, OSHA, and HIPAA standards.
This position requires flexibility, strong leadership skills, and the ability to maintain Genesis lab turnaround time expectations:
24-hour turnaround for all routine samples
Same-day completion for STAT and Onco samples
No pending samples by end of day on Fridays
Evening and occasional weekend availability is required.
Essential Job Functions and Duties
Laboratory Testing & Technical Duties (Bench-Level)
Sample Collection & Preparation
Collect, label, receive, and process specimens according to SOPs.
Prepare samples by centrifuging, aliquoting, diluting, or treating them as required for accurate testing.
Testing & Analysis
Perform laboratory tests per validated standard operating procedures.
Evaluate and interpret test results, identifying any abnormalities or critical values.
Document results in the laboratory information system (LIS) with accuracy and completeness.
Use independent judgment to identify issues, troubleshoot, and take corrective action.
Ensure all routine tests are completed within required turnaround times (24-hour max).
Complete STAT and Onco samples on the same day they are received.
Instrumentation & Equipment
Perform daily start-up and shut-down procedures on assigned instruments.
Troubleshoot, calibrate, maintain, and perform minor repairs on laboratory instruments.
Perform and document scheduled preventive maintenance.
Supervisory & Leadership Responsibilities
Workflow & Operational Oversight
Oversee daily lab workflow to ensure timely processing from receipt to reporting.
Adjust work priorities or staffing assignments as needed to meet operational demands.
Ensure no samples remain pending on Friday at close of business.
Conduct face-to-face handoff reports between shifts.
Staff Support & Training
Provide on-the-job training, coaching, and guidance to laboratory technicians, assistants, and phlebotomists.
Evaluate the competency of all testing personnel on an ongoing basis, and identify training needs and ensure testing personnel receive regular in-service training.
Serve as the primary technical resource for troubleshooting and procedural questions.
Quality Control (QC) & Quality Assurance (QA)
Oversee daily QC and instrument calibration activities.
Review QC results, investigate variances, and implement corrective actions.
Assist in maintaining compliance with CLIA, COLA, OSHA, and internal quality policies.
Support preparation for regulatory and accreditation inspections.
Enroll the laboratory in an approved PT program commensurate with services offered.
Safety & Compliance
Enforce proper PPE use, chemical handling, and biosafety procedures.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all regulatory requirements and ensure staff adherence.
Complete annual competencies and continuing education as required.
Documentation & Recordkeeping
Ensure all logs (QC, maintenance, troubleshooting, incident reports) are complete and compliant.
Maintain accurate inventory records and assist with reagent lot tracking.
Support documentation required for audits, inspections, and corrective action plans.
Communication & Interdepartmental Coordination
Communicate critical or abnormal results to providers following established protocols.
Serve as a liaison between laboratory staff and leadership regarding workflow, issues, and improvement opportunities.
Participate in team meetings to review operations, quality measures, and process improvement goals.
Collaborate with other departments to resolve specimen, order, or reporting discrepancies.
Inventory & Supply Oversight
Monitor supply levels of reagents, consumables, and equipment components.
Restock supplies and notify leadership when inventory needs replenishment.
Identify opportunities for cost savings and reduced waste.
Job Specifications
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Minimum 3 years clinical laboratory experience (5 preferred).
Strong technical knowledge of laboratory testing platforms and methods.
Proficiency with COLA/CLIA requirements and quality assurance processes.
Ability to lead staff, train new employees, and maintain workflow oversight.
Excellent problem-solving and analytical reasoning abilities.
Clear and professional written/verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Comfortable using LIS/LIMS systems and standard office software.
Education & Certification
Bachelor’s degree in a Laboratory Science, AND 2 years CLIA laboratory experience
OR
Associate’s degree in a Laboratory Science AND 4 years CLIA laboratory experience
Certification through ASCP or AMT (MLS, MT, MLT).
Current CPR certification.
