Histology Laboratory Assistant (Day Shift)
Monday thru Friday 7:00AM – 3:00PM
Position Summary
The Histology Laboratory Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of the histology laboratory, including specimen receipt, processing, staining, embedding, slide digitization, and block/slide management. The position ensures accurate documentation, maintains quality control standards, and adheres to all laboratory safety and regulatory requirements.
Note:We are open to hiring candidates without direct experience who demonstrate enthusiasm, reliability, and a desire to develop new skills.
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Ensure accurate receipt, identification, and tracking of all specimens.
2. Accession cases into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), verifying patient demographics, physician information, and test orders.
3. Triage, scan, and route specimens according to laboratory protocol.
4. Prepare specimens for gross examination.
5. Perform embedding of processed tissue specimens.
6. Perform H&E and special stain procedures (automated and manual), as applicable.
7. Perform coverslipping of stained slides.
8. Perform all slide digitization procedures, including scanning, quality verification, file management, and routing of digital images to pathologists, as applicable.
9. Maintain accurate documentation of all testing performed during assigned shift.
10. Monitor and perform quality control procedures.
11. Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and reagents.
12. Organize and archive slides and paraffin blocks.
13. Prepare cases, slides, and blocks for referral laboratories.
14. Communicate effectively with clients, pathologists, and laboratory staff.
15. Clean, disinfect, and maintain laboratory equipment and workstations.
16. Adhere to all CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, CAP, and applicable state regulatory requirements.
17. Assist the Cytogenetics and Cytology departments as needed, including accessioning, routing, preparing, filing, and performing other tasks within the scope of their job qualifications.
18. Perform other duties as assigned by laboratory management.
Qualifications
· Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
· High School Diploma or equivalent required.
· Experience in histology or clinical laboratory preferred.
· Knowledge of medical terminology.
· Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office and LIS systems).
· Accurate data entry skills.
· Strong organizational and communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Reliable and dependable with strong attention to detail.
Pay: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
