Summary:
Genesee & Wyoming (“G&W”) is a growing short line railroad operator with a broad North American and UK/European footprint. The Tax Intern will be responsible for supporting the daily functions and activities of the tax department as well as special projects as necessary.
The internship is full-time (20 hours per week) from January through May with the opportunity to extend through the summer in our Rochester, NY office and paid at a rate of $21.00 hourly.
Responsibilities:
- Compliance – prepare various state and other miscellaneous tax returns to ensure compliance with local and state laws
- Research – perform basic tax research on domestic tax issues, including state and local tax questions, and various other related issues
- Prepare balance sheet reconciliations for tax accounts
- Assist with the calculation of estimated payments
- Assist in preparing book to tax differences and the calculation of state apportionment
- Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Experience:
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Outlook
- Excellent critical thinking/problem solving skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Self-starter
- Ability to interact effectively with all levels
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree
- Must have a valid drivers license
