- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)
- POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)
- Typically has an Bachelor’s Degree in Business, EHS, or related field with four (4) years’ experience in EHS related activities or and Associates Degree in an EHS related field with seven (7) years’ experience in EHS related activities or High School diploma with ten (10) years’ experience in a directed related field.
- Preferred professional certifications and additional training: Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Certified Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification, DOT Training, EHSMS auditor certifications, Emergency First Aid and CPR C ertified, Bloodborne Pathogen Trained, Shipyard Competent Person or other related certification.
- Preferred training in Industrial Hygiene, Safety and/or Environmental Compliance.
- Excellent written, verbal, communication and people skills.
- Computer literate with advanced knowledge of Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point, and the internet.
- Development, implementation and management experience with EHS Management Systems. (Identifying EHS hazards, determining associated risks and ensuring corrective controls).
- Knowledge of Federal (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.), State (VDEQ) and Local EHS regulations.
- Knowledge of OSHA record keeping requirements and familiarity with basic medical terminology.
- Significant experience in shipyard trade operations and performing EHS inspection duties.
- Significant experience is executing effective presentation techniques for EHS Training.
- Good understanding of industrial hygiene regulations and application.
- Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations and go aboard ships.

- WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- The EHS Specialist reports to the EHS Manager or Assistant EHS Manager, depending on the core functions within the organization, and has responsibility for the management of the EHSMS including certification maintenance, audits, team leadership and periodically reporting to the senior management team on the performance of the EHSMS, including environmental performance.
- Other programs within the EHS Department will be assigned as appropriate and will include assistance with the industrial hygiene program.
- Position requires extensive contact within all levels internal and external to the Company as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks and fulfill essential functions of the Department.
- PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- EHSMS Certification Management Responsibility
- Develops and administers the Company’s EHSMS to ensure it is working as described and continuous improvement initiatives are being employed.
- Plans and schedules EHS team activities and evaluates team’s performance.
- Schedules and coordinates EHSMS audits.
- Ensures compliance with the elements of ISO 140001 and OHSAS 18001 (ISO 45001) and communicates these to the Company.
- Collects data and tracks EHS metrics to help identify trends. For example; the Candidate will maintain OSHA 300 Logs; ensure incident and accident investigations are completed in a timely manner, and verify the completion of corrective actions. Prepare, maintain and communicate current incident rates.
- Conducts inspections of assigned areas ensuring that all operations (including those of subcontractors) are in compliance with Federal, State and local regulations and NASSCO EHS policies and procedures; identify EHS hazards or deficiencies and initiate corrective action through production supervision.
- Assists EHS Manager, Industrial Hygienists and other EHS Department personnel in the performance of their duties and performs assigned professional health and safety work such as: conduct compliance inspections and audits; investigate accidents; prepare and disseminate information and reports on safety principles, regulations, standards, and methods.
- Writes and edits EHS Communication (outreach articles, EHS Grams, and training material).
- Prepares written reports on inspections, accident investigations, statistical information on injuries and illnesses, employee complaints or concerns.
- Writes articles for EHS Grams, Gangbox topics or other training programs.
- Reviews reports and articles generated by other team members.
- Maintains documents and records as required.
- Conducts various safety training classes as required, (new hire safety orientation; employee recall safety orientation) and other specialized safety training. Conducts subcontractor safety orientation.
- Reviews current literature and trade publications in order to remain current regarding all OSHA and other applicable EHS standards and regulations.
- Attends and conducts EHS related meetings with all levels of management, employee safety committees and other production training sessions.
- Establishes a close working relationship and communicates with department, stage, area and ship managers on a regular basis.
- Effectively uses computer software programs (Word, Excel, and Power Point).
- Develop EHS Program and instructions associated with those programs as assigned.
- Compile and discern statistical trends and communicate them to the management team.
- Prepare written reports on inspections, accident investigations, statistical information on injuries and illnesses, employee complaints or concerns.
- Conduct EHS Fact Finding and Critique evolutions.
