What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sterile Surgical Technologist position at General Dynamics Information Technology?
GDIT's Military Health Team is hiring a Sterile Surgical Technologist to support the 59th Medical Wing located at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX.
The 59th Medical Wing Science and Technology (ST) office advises and conducts clinical and translational research on matters pertaining to the medical aspects of the Air Expeditionary Force and the health of Air Force (AF) personnel and beneficiaries. In order to support the required research, ST offices conduct translational research in the areas of emergency medical care, combat casualty care, force health protection, restorative medicine, clinical and rehabilitative medicine and specialty centers.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Acts as a sterile or non-sterile member of the Surgical Research Team and acts as the non-sterile circulator during surgical procedures.
- Serves as a veterinary anesthetist with responsibility to assess the biologic and physical status of any animal being anesthetized.
- Provides critical care assistance to the veterinary or research surgeon during veterinary research protocols and training projects and safely and effectively restrains, handles, and transports animals.
- Acts in a multitude of roles during surgical procedures including but not limited to Scrub Tech, Circulating Tech, Anesthesia Tech, Central Sterilization and Supply Tech and Veterinary Medicine Tech.
- All roles are rotated to insure proper staffing for all protocols being conducted in the facility.
- Performs all pre-surgical procedures on research subjects including but not limited to Animal Preparation, central line placement, all vascular access requirements, external and internal monitoring preparation including all vascular line placements, pre-anesthesia sedation as well as pre-surgical pain management.
- Performs general functions in the surgical suite, post-op recovery area, or animal housing facility.
- Handles and prepares surgical specimens (tissue/blood samples, etc).
- Performs tasks and procedures involving use of determining or selecting the most efficacious approach to varied and diverse situations.
- Operates steam sterilizers and ultrasonic cleaner and maintains sterility of surgical supplies and instruments through proper preparation, sterilization and storage.
- Operates/assembles surgical equipment to include but not limited to physiologic monitors, electric or pneumatic saws, drills, defibrillators, anesthesia machines, hypo/hyperthermia units, electro-surgical machines and amps.
- Build all surgical sets to ensure proper instruments and monitors are available for scheduled surgical cases.
- Safely transports, hands, and restrains animals according to established department operating instructions.
- Performs both internal animal transportation as well as external transportation to research partners located throughout the San Antonio Metropolitan Area.
- Assists in performing behavioral tests on animals using various research procedures as identified in specific research protocols.
- Supports hyperbaric medicine operations by in preparing animal subjects and monitoring the hypobaric chamber; adjusting hypo/hyperbaric parameters as necessary to support the research protocol.
- Uses multiple imaging systems to support clinical investigations and research including but not limited to Digital X-Ray, Fluoroscopy (C-Arm), CatScan (Both Large Animal and Small Animal), Micro CT, Bioluminescence and Fluorescence, and MRI.
- Compiles and enters data into computer databases as required by specific protocols.
- Assists in the preparation of material for publication and presentation as required.
- Provides after-hours and weekend care as required.
- Incumbents will adhere to an 80 hour work schedule over a two-week period.
- Work schedules may be adjusted to meet mission requirements.
- Government shall provide radiation dosimetry devices to meet requirements of Government radiation safety requirements.
- Government will send dosimetry badges analysis and track the results.
What You'll Need (required):
- 2 years of experience performing surgery required.
- 1 year experience as a sterile surgical scrub tech required.
- Experience of mathematics to perform such tasks as drug dose calculations.
- Experience of infection control as it relates to cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization in the surgical environment.
- Experience of database creation and maintenance using computer based spreadsheets or databases (i.e., Microsoft Excel/Access).
- Shall have knowledge of sound research design and implementation and be able to help the research team identify problems and formulate solutions.
- Experience in Animal Anesthesia, Vascular line placement, animal pre-anesthesia and animal anesthesia.
- Experience in sterile Central Supply including, cleaning and decontamination of surgical instruments, and building and identification of specialty instrument sets.
- Experience in using Imaging Systems including Digital X-Ray, CatScan, MicroCT, Fluoroscopy, Bioluminescence and Fluorescence, and MRI.
- Experience in the use of Hyper/Hypo Baric Chambers in clinical investigations and research, including setup, monitoring and adjusting these systems.
- Experience in evaluating basic animal medical status to allow coordination with attending veterinarian to maintain health and welfare of research subjects.
- The Contractor Personnel will comply with all Employee Health Requirements, including required vaccinations
- The Contractor Personnel shall have and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- US citizenship with the ability to obtain a T3 security investigation.
