About the Role
Health, Safety & Industrial Hygiene: Reporting to the Manager of Safety and Industrial Hygiene. Progression for this role is as follows: Industrial Hygienist, Industrial Hygienist Senior, Industrial Hygienist Specialist, Industrial Hygienist Specialist Senior, Staff Industrial Hygienist. Initial starting role and salary is commiserate with education and experience.
In this role the selected candidate will interface with all levels of management, production workers and regulatory personnel to assist in the implementation of and assess compliance to EB's Industrial Hygiene & Safety programs at the Groton, CT Facility.
Responsibilities
- Be the Subject matter expert (SME) for Electric Boats Hazardous Communication program
- Safety Data Sheet (SDS) evaluation and maintenance for vendor-supplied materials
- Development and maintenance of in-plant and shipped material Hazcom labels
- Review purchases of new hazardous materials for use at EB
- Perform industrial hygiene sampling (Noise, Particulate, Hazardous Materials, Vibration etc.)
- Support sampling of painted surfaces and interface with Engineering and Planning on how to safely work these materials
- Perform ergonomic evaluations for both in process work and office workers
- Review of various objective quality evidence (e.g. Industrial hygiene sample data, training records, Material Safety Data Sheets for materials in use)
- Be an active member in deck plate safety and industrial hygiene issues and programs
- Conduct periodic surveillances of ships and facilities for Safety/IH deficiencies (including tracking and trending)
- Observe in process work to ensure hazards are addressed and proper procedures, tools and PPE are being utilized.
- Provide oversight of contractor work both shipboard and non-shipboard, and identify and report deficiencies to the contracting organization.
- Participate in accident investigations, analyze safety and health data and develop recommended actions.
- Issue written reports to management summarizing findings, recommendations and corrective actions.
- Develop and revise safety and health training lesson plans & provide safety and health training as necessary.
- Maintain the EB Safety Manual, Industrial Hygiene Programs and support the Contractor's Health and Safety Manual to ensure compliance with OSHA, ANSI and ISO 45001.
- Develop and issue Hazard Communication and Safety Bulletins to provide timely and necessary information to the workforce.
- Interface with Facilities and Operations personnel on projects to establish safety and industrial hygiene controls.
- Interface with regulators on employee complaints, site inspections and other regulatory activities.
- Interface with 2 shift safety and health personnel
- Work overtime as necessary, provide off-shift and weekend coverage as necessary.
- Travel as necessary
- Must be able to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Industrial Hygiene or Toxicology
- Must be able to work at heights and confined spaces as required
Required Skills
- 5 year or more of experience in Industrial Hygiene
Preferred Skills
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Experience in a shipyard trade or construction environment
Pay range and compensation package
Initial starting role and salary is commiserate with education and experience.
