Job Description

In this unique role as supervisor of the lifting and handling (L&H) group, you'll guide, oversee, and approve the work of a team providing structural engineering support operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS).  This group provides details of temporary structure, and heavy lift equipment guidance documents used to complete some of the most complex warships built in the world. 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Safety Leadership:

  • Champion and enforce BIW safety policies and procedures in Main Yard operations.
  • Promote a culture of proactive safety awareness and accountability across the team.
  • Ensure safe workplace conditions and compliance with government and company safety standards. 

Continuous Improvement:

  • Champion BOS principles and productivity enhancements.
  • Identify and eliminate non-value-added activities; lead implementation of process improvements.
  • Leverage A3 problem-solving and other structured improvement tools.
  • Responsible for the training and development of assigned personnel.
  • Create and maintain small tools budgets to develop new capabilities.
  • Contribute to the Operational Performance Improvement Plan (OPIP) for waterfront engineering. 

Operational Management:

  • Work with Engineering Manager and Program Office to evaluate and prioritize workload requirements.
  • Report progress and status at various manager level meetings and Departmental White Boards, as required.
  • Maintain EVMS for scheduled work.
  • Develop employee performance evaluations as required.
  • Manage Plan of the Week (POW) process for L&H group. 

Lead Team in Following Topics:

  • Engineering of crane lifts and turns of ship components weighing in excess of 50 tons and of varying complexity.
  • Engineering of temporary ship support, as well as jigs, fixtures, lifting devices and custom tools used in the ship construction process.
  • Determination of lifting lug locations, temporary back up structure if required, welded connection details and non-destructive testing (NDT) requirements.
  • Working with our design force to communicate lifting and handling information to the Trades.
  • Working with heavy transportation equipment such as Self Propelled Modular Transporters, Shipyard Transporters, and our Ship Translation System.
  • Routinely interfacing with manufacturing personnel on the deck plates to provide guidance as necessary.
  • Participate in or lead technical interchanges on issues with customers such as U. S. Navy (NAVSEA and Supervisor of Shipbuilding), or others as required.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

Required: Bachelor’s degree in civil or mechanical engineering.

Preferred: Master’s degree in engineering or business.

Required/Preferred Experience

Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years, 10 years preferred, of practical experience and/or education in Structural Engineering and Design, with emphasis on welded connection design and associated NDT requirements.
  • Familiarity with different grades and types of steel, aluminum and wood materials.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a time sensitive environment with multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to read, interpret and follow procedures, standards and work instructions.
  • Strong leadership, self-confidence, and project management skills.
  • Innovative Leadership qualities, problem solving capabilities, and a strong passion for employee development.
  • Standard computer skills including MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of structural analysis methods, both traditional hand calculations as well as Beam and 3D Mesh Finite Element Analysis.  Preference is given to experience in software tools including RISA, Mathcad, and FEMAP/Nastran.
  • Willingness to work extended hours.
  • Must be able to access government facilities; ability to obtain DoD secret clearance is required.
    • This position requires you to be able to obtain a government security clearance if you do not already have one.  You must be a US Citizen for consideration and you must be able to obtain an interim security clearance within the first 45 days of hire.  For more information regarding the security clearance process, please visit Investigations & Clearance Process (dcsa.mil).

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of AISC Steel Construction, ASME B30 & BTH (Below the Hook) Codes and Standards.
  • Experience supervising technical employees.
  • Familiarity with the BMDA contract and Navy maintenance/modernization programs.
  • Understanding of Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement tools.
  • Demonstrated experience in new ship integration and waterfront operations.
