Summary / Objective
The Delivery & Bulk Loads Driver is responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient delivery of gas, welding-related products, cylinders, bulk loads, and other regulated materials to customer and branch locations. This role represents the company in a professional manner while interfacing with customers regarding products, deliveries, and related issues. The position requires strict compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including DOT, FDA, OSHA, and EPA, with heightened attention to safety, security, and professionalism—particularly when handling hazardous materials.
Essential Functions
- Gather and coordinate daily customer billing papers and order requests, including will-call, hot shot, and scheduled deliveries.
- Learn, plan, and efficiently execute assigned city, regional, and hiline routes with minimal supervision.
- Load, unload, secure, and transport products—including cylinders, bulk loads, and hazardous materials—in compliance with all safety and handling requirements.
- Deliver products to customers and branch locations while adhering to load safety standards, DOT regulations, Hours of Service (HOS), and safe driving practices.
- Complete scheduled pick-up and delivery of cylinders and products from customers and branches.
- Ensure orders are properly selected and staged; address and resolve delivery exceptions promptly.
- Maintain proper cleanliness of assigned vehicles and perform accurate pre- and post-trip inspections.
- Follow routine vehicle maintenance programs and promptly report mechanical issues or safety concerns.
- Complete and maintain accurate logs, reports, delivery receipts, vehicle inspection reports, and hazardous materials documentation.
- Comply with all company safety policies and government-mandated safety regulations; attend required safety, plant, and driver meetings.
- Communicate effectively with dispatchers, supervisors, customers, and team members regarding delivery status, delays, and incidents.
- Provide professional customer service; listen to and resolve customer concerns when possible and communicate unresolved issues to management.
- Act as backup for other company driving positions as CDL endorsements allow.
- Assist with fill plant operations and liquid vessel filling in compliance with FDA rules when not driving, as directed by the Plant or Branch Manager.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies involving spills, leaks, or accidents, following established procedures and reporting requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure operational effectiveness, safety, and profitability.
Competencies

Possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with required endorsements appropriate to assigned routes and equipment.
Employees holding a Class B CDL must be willing and able to upgrade to a Class A CDL within a company‑defined timeframe, as required by business needs, route assignments, or equipment changes. Company support for training and testing may be provided in accordance with company policy.
- Clean driving record with a demonstrated history of safe operation per MVR standards.
- Ability and willingness to comply with all required DOT testing, including random drug testing and DOT physicals.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including hazardous materials requirements, placarding, and emergency response.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan routes, loads, and delivery schedules efficiently.
- Ability to complete basic mathematical calculations and accurately document information in logs and reports.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with customers, coworkers, and regulatory authorities.
- Safety-conscious, dependable, and capable of making sound decisions in dynamic or emergency situations.
- Mentally adaptable and flexible; able to manage varied routes, schedules, weather conditions, and customer interactions.
- Willingness to work extended hours, weekends, or holidays as business needs require.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift, maneuver, and secure materials weighing up to 100 pounds, with some loads potentially exceeding this weight with assistance or equipment.
- Ability to sit for extended periods; frequent bending, stooping, climbing, and working in and around vehicles and plant environments.
- Capability to work in diverse and sometimes adverse weather and environmental conditions.
- Vision correctable to within normal range for vehicle operation and completion of required documentation.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Minimum of one year of prior city delivery, regional, or over-the-road driving experience strongly preferred.
- Experience handling cylinders, bulk loads, or hazardous materials is a significant advantage.
