The Mechanical Engineer II-Engines plays an important role in advancing the design and performance of internal combustion engines (ICE), through engine development, data-driven analysis, testing, and design of system components. This position leverages data analytics, ATI Vision, and data acquisition tools to optimize system behavior, improve engine control, improve product reliability, and increase engine performance across a range of gaseous fueled applications.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop engine systems and components for engine performance using design reviews, testing, problem solving, and calculations to support engine and generator design.
  • Conduct testing to evaluate the engine and systems relative to performance and emissions.
  • Conduct system analysis using development processes to aid in optimizing the transient, emissions, and steady-state performance of the engine/generator.
  • Interpret testing results and collaborate with cross-functional teams through design reviews and technical discussions to guide product development.
  • Contribute to the development of engine workflows and analysis best practices to improve group efficiency and accuracy.
  • Document project objectives, methods, and results using standardized reporting formats.
  • Apply data analysis techniques, including Matlab/Simulink or Python-based scripting, and machine learning to support predictive modeling and performance forecasting.
  • Stay informed on relevant technologies, tools, and industry trends to support continuous improvement.

Education:

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering, or related discipline

Work Experience:

  • 2 or more years of relevant work experience

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

  • Experience in new IC engine design and development.
  • Ability to create systems for internal combustion engines, including understanding of the effects of spark control, adjusting AFR for best performance and emissions, PID settings for best transient performance, MAP based control, calibrating w/EGR, and calibrating with a catalyst.
  • Develops, tests, and integrates complex components and evaluates overall effectiveness, cost (including cost/benefit analysis), reliability (risk analysis), and safety.
  • Designs, develops, executes, and evaluates testing, product specifications, and process validation plans for a variety of complex products and/or components.
  • Ability to perform detail-oriented work with a high degree of accuracy on multiple projects.
  • Good knowledge of internal combustion engine performance development and specification.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a deep understanding of internal combustion engine design, operation, and testing.
  • Written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly interpret and present complex simulation results to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and predictive analytics techniques applied to engine performance and emissions modeling.
  • Collaborate with internal manufacturing partners, contract manufacturers, designers, and product specialists to optimize complex and advanced designs for performance.

Education:

Preferred Job Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field of study

Work Experience:

  • 3 years of hands-on experience in engine and engine system development
  • 3 years of experience applying MATLAB/Simulink and Python in internal combustion engine design
  • 3 years of experience using ATI Vision for calibrating internal combustion engines
  • 2 years of experience in an Automotive, Development, or a related engineering discipline
  • 2 years of hands-on experience with engine and engine component development
  • 2 years of experience in powertrain data collection and analysis - ATI/CAN or similar
  • 1 year of hands-on experience with ATI Vision as applied to engine control systems
  • 1 year of experience in exhaust aftertreatment simulation with GT-Suite/GT-xCHEM or CHEMKIN.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of internal combustion engines and effective engine test methods
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C , Labview, Targetlink, Vision, ETOS or similar to modify embedded control software
  • Extensive experience with internal combustion engine performance development and specification
  • Demonstrated written communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to apply engineering knowledge and experience to improve products, services and processes
  • Data analysis and control/diagnostic feature creation skills
  • Familiarity with systems engineering based problem solving
  • Proven ability to work well with others as part of a diverse global team
