Job Description – GCFD#1 Fire Training Officer
Starting Salary: $36,000 to $40,000 annually DOE

Purpose of the Job:
Under the direction of the Fire Chief and/ or Deputy Chief, the Training Officer shall perform highly skilled, professional work in the planning, coordinating, and directing classroom orientation, to include specialized practical training for fire personnel, in addition to coordinating the day-to-day operations of the fire training facility. The Training Officer shall maintain certification to work as an Emergency Medical Technician and shall perform other related duties and responsibilities as directed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
As a member of the GCFD#1 management team, the Training Officer must have strong technical skills in the areas of assignment, as well as the ability to understand and support the mission, vision, guiding values, and principles of the District.
- Identify the training needs of the department. Design, implement, execute, and evaluate a variety of training and educational programs, to include the recruit academy, Health and Wellness Program, company and department-wide rescue, special operations, fire suppression, and firefighter safety and survival training.
- Safely supervise and conduct elevated risk emergency training scenarios, including, but not limited to live fire training, high angle rope rescue training, confined space training, and hazardous materials response training.
- Evaluate emergency operations and determine areas for improvement within the department.
- Conduct effective training demonstrations, courses, and seminars to management, supervisors, and front-line Fire Department personnel.
- Maintain accurate and reliable training records documenting mandated training according to departmental and legal standards.
- Coordinate firefighter apprenticeship program, including monitoring course completions and periodic testing.
Coordinate training, testing, and evaluation of firefighters, firefighter trainees, and firefighter applicants. Participate in the administration of testing procedures, including but not limited to mentoring employees on available training and educational opportunities.
- Participate in departmental, state, and national committees and organizations to ensure professional standards are known and adhered to by the department.
- Coordinate the maintenance of the training site including structures, grounds, and department equipment.
- Attend additional training and obtain certifications or levels of competency as directed by the
Deputy Fire Chief and/or Fire Chief.
Organizational Relationship:
- The Training Officer reports directly to the Deputy Fire Chief
Minimum Qualifications: o A minimum of five (5) years with a fire department. o Progressive responsibility level within the fire service. o Previous experience as a fire department officer. o Firefighter I o IFSAC certified instructor within 1 yr. o Current Idaho EMT license o CPR Certification o ICS 100, 200 o Wildland S-130, S-190
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of Fie Department Operational Guidelines, policies, procedures and applicable local bylaws, County regulations, Federal acts, and standards.
- Knowledge of the NFPA 1001 and 1002 Firefighter Training and Standards.
- Knowledge of training in Incident Command System (ICS) minimum ICS 200.
- Knowledge of computer software / online applications. Word, Excel, Idaho PERKS, QuickBooks,
NFIRS and email.
- Fire Hazard Reduction methods to successfully reduce fire hazards.
Techniques utilized for public education and information.
- Fire investigation techniques, methods, and practices.
- Perform the essential functions of the Fire Captain position.
Special Requirements
Work is performed in an indoor and field environment. Work may be performed in high, precarious places, confined and awkward spaces or in high traffic areas. May be exposed to traffic, equipment and fire hazards, extreme heat, smoke, carcinogens, biohazards, adverse weather conditions, temperature and noise extremes, dusts, odors, toxic, caustic chemicals, and pathogenic substances. Subject to unusual fatigue an elevated level of stress from irregular working hours and incident call activity.
Requires the ability to lift, bend, climb (stairs, ladders, fence, etc.) walks (on normal, uneven, and slippery surfaces, sit, stand for various periods of time. Must lift/carry up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Must be able to drive and operate responding apparatus and vehicles, equipped with lights and sirens. Requires the strength and stamina to perform fire suppression duties.
Must be able to make critical decisions and direct others under extreme conditions. Must effectively communicate orally and in writing.
