Job Description
GEI Consultants is seeking a junior-level Ecological Restoration Landscape Designer in our Rancho Cordova, California office to be a part of our tight knit environmental practice. The position involves working on challenging and meaningful ecological restoration and conservation projects throughout California, but especially in the Central Valley, Delta, Bay Area, and Sierra Nevada. As part of our multidisciplinary project teams, you will have an important role pursuing and winning projects; supporting development of ecological restoration plans, natural resource management plans, and other technical documents; and working as part of our ecological restoration team to solve an array of water and environmental issues critical to California s ecosystems within a changing climate. Projects will range from statewide conservation initiatives to regional ecological restoration planning to site-specific habitat restoration design and implementation. The position has exceptional growth opportunities.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Support preparation of ecological restoration conceptual plans, construction documents (i.e., plans and specifications), and cost estimates.
- Support preparation of habitat mitigation monitoring plans, long-term management plans, and conservation plans.
- Support oversight of construction and implementation of ecological restoration projects including but not limited to – native tree and shrub planting, seeding, erosion control measure installation, invasive species control, etc.
- As part of integrated teams, conduct plant/wildlife/habitat field surveys, biological literature research, mapping of biological resources, compliance with environmental regulations, and report writing.
- As part of integrated teams, conduct habitat mapping and assessments and surveys for special-status species and other sensitive biological resources at numerous sites throughout northern California and the Central Valley.
- As part of integrated teams, work closely and collaboratively with other project environmental specialists, engineers, planners, project managers, and project directors to execute projects effectively and efficiently.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor s Degree in Landscape Architecture. Additional Bachelor s Degree in Life Sciences (Ecology, Ecological Restoration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Botany, Biology, Fisheries, Forestry) preferred.
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience working in a collaborative interdisciplinary team environment.
- Experience in construction document preparation.
- 1-3 years of experience with ecological restoration, habitat mitigation, natural resource management, and conservation planning.1-3 years of experience planning, designing, and implementing various types of habitat restoration projects including river restoration, habitat mitigation, invasive species control, and shoreline stabilization.
- Field experience working in one or more of the following: riverine, riparian/floodplain, wetland, tidal marsh, and native grassland/prairie habitats.
- Native plant identification skills and knowledge of California plant communities.
- Outstanding problem-solving, organization, coordination, writing, people, and verbal communication skills; solid work ethic; and ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to interpret, understand and comply with complex statues, ordinances, regulations standards and laws.
- Curiosity and a commitment to learning.
Additional Qualifications Desired
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Sketchup and Infraworks.
- Membership and/or experience with professional organization specializing in design or restoration.
- Skills/Experience with tools that address climate change and future climate scenarios.
- Hand drawing skills.
