Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from accredited institution
- A valid Tennessee teaching certificate with endorsement in guidance counseling

Job Goals:
To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.
Performance Responsibilities:
- In person job attendance
- Implement standards as defined by the Tennessee Model for Comprehensive School Counseling.
- Meets with each class to explain the role of guidance counselor.
- Develops a formal process for teacher referrals for counseling.
- Develops an informal process that would allow students to request help in problem solving.
- Maintains daily schedule of activities.
- Maintains a record of students who receive individual or small group counseling.
- Utilizes appropriate test results in working with students. Administers 6th- 8th grade assessments as required by the system.
- Provides individual counseling for students referred by school personnel and maintains record of referrals.
- Administers additional assessments as directed.
- Identifies potential absentee problems and works with parents, teachers, and students to promote good school attendance. Schedules meetings with each class to emphasize the importance of good attendance and appropriate behavior (preventive strategies).
- Maintains case record files for delinquent and "high risk" students and develops intervention strategies to assist the identified students in coping with interpersonal difficulties. Documents intervention efforts.
- Provides information to students related to careers, occupations, and substance abuse through displays and class meetings.
- Collects specific information by observing and charting student behavior as requested by school personnel.
- Serves in a consultative role at S-Team meetings to determine appropriate student placement.
- Utilizes community resources to supplement and enhance services.
- Consults with classroom teachers and provides specific recommendations for dealing with behavior problems.
- Serves as a member of IEP teams as needed.
- Serves as a member of 504 teams as needed.
- Maintains confidentiality of student records.
- Attends workshops and other meetings that promote professional growth.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Capacity and Ability Requirements:
The usual job demands require the following physical requirements: speaking, some lifting (up to 50 lbs.), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, and physical dexterity.
Terms of Employment:
Ten (10) month work year. Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
