What are the responsibilities and job description for the Winter Caretaker position at GCI Careers?

GCI's Winter Caretaker is a seasonal position that provides GCI’s Agulowak Retreat with an onsite presence throughout the winter months when the Retreat is not in operation. The Winter Caretaker is responsible for maintaining the general security and well-being of company facilities located on the Agulowak River in Alaska.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide security for property and buildings simply by virtue of being onsite.
  • Report visitors, incidents, or damage to property to Retreat Operations Manager Director
  • Harvest firewood according to the stipulations of WTSP special use permit
  • Ensure storage building temperature remains above freezing for the duration of term.
  • Perform periodic inspections of various Retreat structures and facilities.
  • Perform snow removal as needed.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to safely operate snowmachines and ATVs. 
  • Ability to safely operate a chainsaw and understand how to identify and safely cut standing dead trees. 
  • Ability to withstand months of isolation and solitude, to live unassisted and to work independently.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Must have at least one season experience in a similar work environment with similar duties.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required. 

Certifications: N/A.

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry up to 70 lbs. and work in cramped spaces and at heights. Hearing, vision, depth perception, and hand-to-eye coordination sufficient to perform job duties.  Visual and auditory acuity necessary to operate equipment and identify color-coding.  Ability to tolerate temperature and weather extremes (fumes and odors, dust, low light conditions.)  Strength and coordination sufficient to perform job duties. 

Working Conditions: Job site is a remote facility without roads or access of any kind other than helicopter for nearly 7 months.  The winter caretaker may be required to work outside when temperatures can drop to -30 degrees at times. Living quarters are small and toilet facilities consist of an outdoor outhouse. Electric power is limited, and water must be hauled from a river by hand. 

The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the core business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. As such, you will be requested to provide emergency after hours contact numbers, to include your home and cell phone numbers if you have those services.

Driving Requirements (if applicable): Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
