GCI's Engineer IV, Engineering & Architecture will work as part of a team, will work cross-functionally as required to develop, deploy, and maintain the products and services offered by the company. Interact with internal groups and external customers to ensure our products and services are performing as designed. Work within capital and operations budgets to ensure projects remain on scope and within budget. Follow company policy and department guidelines to support and successfully complete development and lifecycle maintenance of network plans, policies, and procedures following engineering/architecture design principles.   
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AT ALL LEVELS:

 

  • Work with engineering and network operations support teams to resolve any hardware/technical issues and implement changes.
  • Work with cross functional teams to define project requirements and planning necessary to deliver quality products on time.
  • Work with customer care teams to monitor, identify, and resolve customer issues in a timely fashion.
  • Provide technical content used to create marketing/sales collateral.

Focus Areas:

Forecasting, Automation, & Optimization

  1. Accountable for forecasting demand on the GCI network (satellite, microwave, core, TERRA, HFC, Mobility).
    1. Provides forecasts bi-annually for input into the LRP (long range plan).
    2. Provides ad-hoc capacity checks as requested from other GCI departments.
  2. Coordinates with other departments to optimize costs by consolidating or “right sizing” leased capacity as necessary.
  3. Accountable for automating and optimizing processes, workflows, and tools.

o    Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize, multitask, and work under pressure meeting deadlines. 
o    Knowledge of basic RF propagation principles, cellular theory, RF engineering tools and antenna theory.
o    Knowledge of GSM/UMTS/LTE/5G technologies and 3GPP specifications.
o    Knowledge of RF propagation/prediction tools such as Mentum Planet and/or Atoll.
o    Knowledge of drive test validation tools such as TEMS Discovery/Investigation.
•    SAFETY & SECURITY - Supports a safe work environment by following all workplace safety rules and guidelines; complies with applicable Security policies and procedures.
•    TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY - Proficient computer skills and MS Office knowledge (e.g., Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel) to complete job duties effectively, such as using the company intranet and to accurately retrieve and input information into databases or equivalent.
•    Well-developed computer skills (UNIX, Oracle Database, Excel macros and SQL programming

Additional Job Requirements:

This is an advanced level position, requiring a high level of specific discipline expertise and the ability to make technical decisions independently on significant engineering problems. Required to have knowledge of other Engineering disciplines and complex company initiatives, crossing business units and projects involving multiple disciplines. Required to have advanced technical leadership. Evaluate manufacturers’ products, develop test plans, and advise projects. Maintain current discipline systems design standards and help maintain upgrades/modifications as required. Serve as an integral resource to facilitate the integration of work processes, physical plant, employees, and customers throughout the company. Responsible for producing standards documentation and development of long-range planning to support implementation of advanced services.

  • Demonstrated and documented expertise in design, implementation, editing and support. 
  • Excellent time management skills to manage complex projects on time and within budget.
  • Excellent experience with configuration, routing, switches, within a Network Telecommunications environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment, professionally and support junior engineers.
  • Highly intuitive analytic, strategic, interpersonal critical/creativity thinking skills are necessary.

  • Excellent capability in using Microsoft Office tools; Excel, Word, Outlook, Visio, etc.

  • Ability to tackle the most difficult engineering issues presented to the engineer.  A proven leader for large complex projects or initiatives.  The ability to guide others/teams in the selection of new technologies.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Required: *A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, or related field. *
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in relevant field. *

Preferred: 

  • Professional or Expert level Certifications: Cisco CCNA, MEF CECP, SCTE Dep, (SCTE DEP (DOCSIS Engineering Professional) Certified SOA Architect, CITA, EACOE.
  • Telecommunications experience. 
  • Other telecom industry or job specific certifications. 

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:   

  • This position requires driving a company-owned vehicle, company provided vehicle, or a personal vehicle on behalf of the company. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, a satisfactory driving record, and successfully complete Defensive Driving course.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS:  
  • This position may require travel throughout the state of Alaska.
  • Work is primarily sedentary, requiring daily routine computer usage.
  • Ability to work shifts as assigned, work in standard office/home office setting, and operate standard office equipment.
  • Ability to accurately communicate information and ideas to others effectively.
  • Physical agility and effort sufficient to perform job duties safely and effectively.
  • Ability to make valid judgments and decisions.   
  • Available to work additional time on weekends, holidays, before or after normal work hours when necessary. 
  • Must work well in a team environment and be able to work with a diverse group of people and customers.
  • Virtual workers must comply with remote work policies and agreements.

Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the core business hours to respond to the immediate emergency.
