Assistant Project Manager (Electrical & Mechanical)
GavinHeath is partnering with a client in Cedar Rapids, IA, looking to add three Assistant Project Managers (APMs) to their team. This role is a Full-Time, on-site position supporting large-scale mission-critical and industrial construction programs.
This single posting includes three distinct openings:
- 2 Mechanical Assistant Project Manager (Mechanical APM)
- 1 Electrical Assistant Project Manager (Electrical APM)
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities (Applicable to All APM Roles)
- Support senior project leadership in planning, executing, and delivering complex industrial and mission-critical construction projects.
- Assist with project scheduling, look-ahead creation, and coordination across field teams to maintain production goals.
- Manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, drawings, and documentation to ensure accuracy and timely approval.
- Conduct regular site walks to verify progress, track quantities, identify issues, and support field problem-solving.
- Partner with subcontractors and trades to drive schedule alignment, resolve installation challenges, and maintain project standards.
- Support procurement activities including bid evaluation, vendor coordination, material tracking, and long-lead item management.
- Collaborate with safety and QA/QC teams to ensure compliance with OSHA, project specifications, and internal standards.
- Contribute to cost tracking, progress reporting, labor analysis, and budget updates in support of the Project Manager.
Electrical APM Responsibilities (1 opening)
- Assist with planning and installation oversight of 480V 12kV electrical systems, including switchgear, grounding, and transformer installation.
- Support commissioning transitions (EFO/TFO), testing, energization preparation, and turnover package development.
- Review and interpret electrical one-lines, schematics, installation details, and vendor submittals.
- Coordinate directly with electricians, foremen, and MV equipment vendors to maintain alignment with design and safety requirements.
- Ensure adherence to NEC standards and mission-critical electrical safety protocols.
Mechanical APM Responsibilities (2 openings)
- Support mechanical project managers with installation sequencing and oversight for piping systems, HVAC assets, pumps, skids, and industrial mechanical equipment.
- Review and track P&IDs, isometric drawings, fabrication packages, and equipment submittals.
- Coordinate mechanical subcontractors in system installation, pressure testing, equipment staging, and tie-in execution.
- Assist with mechanical QA/QC activities including hydrostatic testing, torque logs, weld documentation, and pre-commissioning checklists.
- Collaborate with commissioning teams to prepare mechanical systems for integrated startup and turnover.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications (All APM Roles)
- 3 years of experience as an Assistant Project Manager, Project Engineer, or Construction Coordinator in electrical or mechanical contracting.
- Proven experience managing RFIs, submittals, change orders, and field coordination.
- Hands-on involvement working with foremen, trades, and subcontractors on active construction sites.
- Working knowledge of project scheduling tools (Primavera P6, MS Project, or similar).
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and maintain documentation accuracy.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical submittals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting industrial, mission-critical, or data center construction projects.
- Experience with Procore or similar construction management platforms.
- Bachelor s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Bilingual (Spanish) for enhanced subcontractor and field communication.
Electrical APM-Specific Requirements
- Experience with high-voltage power distribution (480V 12kV), switchgear, transformers, or commissioning support.
Mechanical APM-Specific Requirements
- Experience with industrial mechanical systems, piping, HVAC equipment installation, or mechanical commissioning.
