What are the responsibilities and job description for the Freight Agent (1099) – LTL Sales | Remote | Southern California Preferred position at Gateway Transport Inc.?
Overview:
Gateway Transport Inc. is looking to bring on experienced Freight Agents to grow with us on a 1099 (independent contractor) basis. This is an opportunity for someone who already understands freight shipping and wants to leverage a strong platform, carrier network, and support team to grow their book of business.
About Us:
Since 1993, Gateway Transport has been helping small to large shippers move freight efficiently across the United States, specializing in LTL shipments ranging from 100 to 25,000 lbs. As a 3PL, we provide access to a wide network of top national and regional carriers, allowing for competitive pricing, strong coverage, and consistent service.
What You’ll Do:
- Evaluate customer shipping needs (lanes, pricing, service levels)
- Provide competitive LTL solutions and alternatives
- Build and manage your own book of business
- Maintain and grow customer relationships
- Coordinate shipments and ensure a high level of service
What You’ll Have Access To:
- New, best-in-class Transportation Management System
- Compare multiple LTL carrier rates instantly
- Generate BOLs and schedule pickups
- Track shipments with real-time visibility
- Access reporting to manage and grow accounts
- Extensive carrier network (regional national)
- Full back-end support team for:
- Claims
- Billing and invoicing
- Carrier coordination and issue resolution
- Opportunity to work with existing Gateway customers and expand business
Services You Can Offer:
- Strong focus on LTL freight (core specialty)
- Ability to support FTL, expedited, and other modes as needed
Compensation & Structure:
- 1099 commission-based role
- Competitive percentage of margin
- Consistent payouts on a set schedule
- No cap on earnings
We keep the structure straightforward and transparent. At the same time, this role comes with responsibility—particularly around the quality of business being brought on. Because of how receivables work in this industry, there can be exposure if a customer does not pay. For that reason, we’re selective on credit and expect agents to bring on solid, collectible business. Any bad debt would be reconciled against future commissions, so there is alignment across the board in maintaining strong accounts.
Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years of LTL / logistics experience REQUIRED
- Must have experience working as a shipping partner (3PL, broker, or carrier side)
- Strong understanding of:
- Carrier rules and tariffs
- Freight classification (NMFC / classing)
- Accessorials and pricing structures
- Existing book of business strongly preferred (but not required)
- Self-motivated and comfortable working independently
Important:
This is not an entry-level role. If you do not have direct experience in LTL or freight brokerage, this will not be a fit.
Why This Role:
This is built for experienced agents who want to maximize their earning potential, maintain control over their accounts, and operate with a strong support system behind them—without unnecessary layers or micromanagement.
