What are the responsibilities and job description for the Behavioral Specialist position at Gateway Behavioral Health Services?
The Behavioral Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring behavior support services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities residing in supervised living settings. The Behavioral Specialist works as part of an interdisciplinary team to promote independence, improve quality of life, reduce challenging behaviors, and ensure compliance with Mississippi Department of Mental Health (DMH) standards and agency policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct behavioral assessments and analyze factors contributing to challenging behaviors.
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized Behavior Support Plans (BSPs).
- Collect, review, and analyze behavioral data to evaluate intervention effectiveness.
- Train and coach direct support professionals and residential staff on behavior support strategies and implementation techniques.
- Provide ongoing consultation to residential teams regarding behavioral concerns.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and person-centered planning activities.
- Monitor the use of behavioral interventions and ensure compliance with approved support plans.
- Assist in identifying environmental modifications and positive behavior support strategies to improve outcomes.
- Ensure behavioral services comply with Mississippi DMH regulations, Medicaid requirements, and agency policies.
- Review incidents involving challenging behaviors and recommend preventative interventions.
- Support individuals in developing adaptive living skills, communication skills, social skills, and community integration skills.
- Complete all required documentation accurately and within established timeframes.
- Participate in quality assurance, program reviews, and accreditation activities as required.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, Counseling, Social Work, Special Education, or a related field.
- Minimum one (1) year experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, behavioral challenges, or related populations.
- Experience developing and monitoring Behavior Support Plans.
- Knowledge of Positive Behavior Support (PBS) principles and behavior modification techniques.
- Experience developing and monitoring Behavior Support Plans.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to pass criminal background checks and other screenings required by Mississippi DMH.
- Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills.
- Experience working in supervised living, group homes, IDD waiver services, or residential treatment settings.
- Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), BCaBA, BCBA, or other behavioral certification preferred.
- Experience with behavior data collection and analysis.
- Knowledge of Mississippi DMH and Medicaid regulations related to IDD services.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to participate in community activities and home visits.
- Ability to respond appropriately during behavioral crises.
- Ability to safely assist individuals as permitted by agency policy and training.
Pay: $22.00 - $25.00 per hour
