As a Custodial Worker (MVO), you will perform custodial and janitorial work such as sweeping, scrubbing and waxing floors, washing windows and walls, dusting and polishing furniture and fixtures. Work is done by hand or with powered equipment. In order to accomplish the custodial/janitorial assignments the incumbent must on a regular and recurring basis operate light duty motor vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds to transport personnel, material, or equipment to work sites located on the park.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (other than blueprints)
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Dexterity and Safety
  • Vehicle Operation
  • Work Practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order)


SCREEN OUTS:
Minimum Qualification
- Perform difficult laborer and custodial/janitorial tasks including ability to operate trucks weighing up to 10,000 pounds; properly loading and unloading various supplies and equipment; to perform work providing laboring assistance to others in the maintenance of buildings, cleaning restrooms, windows, vacuuming carpets, floors, emptying trash and recyclables; operate power equipment such as floor scrubbers, floor buffers and floor strippers. Utilize most hand and power tools associated with these tasks including light hand and power and cleaning custodial tools. Perform these tasks on your own initiative under general supervision subject to occasional inspection for compliance with work and safety standards and policies.

Driver's License: This position requires that the incumbent possess a Driver's License.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Use of commercial/industrial janitorial materials, tools, and equipment to clean carpeting, walls, windowsills, floors, and all surface areas to include exhibit and artifact coverings, security surfaces/barriers, in the museum, galleries, and exhibit rooms.
  • Using prescribed methods (Tung oil treated dust mops for wood floors and Watco--tung oil for furniture, banisters, and doors), equipment, and materials.
  • Use heavy duty powered equipment, such as floor scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, burnishes, hydraulic lifts, scaffolding, and high-pressure hot water cleaners for carpets (Steamex).
  • Clean restroom fixtures consisting of toilet bowls, urinals, lavatories and service sinks with operating valves, faucets, drains, and exposed pipes; electric hand dryers; dispensers for soap, towels, toilet tissue, and sanitary napkins, refuse receptacles; and toilet partitions including their doors.
  • Clean tram load zones and tram capsules.
An appointment to this position is restricted by law (5 U.S.C. 3310) to Veterans who are preference eligible if such applicants are available.

All Custodial certificates must list the preference eligible first, then a certificate of non-preference eligible may be issued.
