Job Summary-
Gates Construction is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Mobile Crane Operator to operate mobile crane equipment for lifting, moving, and placing heavy materials, equipment, and structures at our construction sites. The ideal candidate will be responsible for safely executing lifts, maintaining equipment, and collaborating with our site crew to ensure smooth, timely project progress.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate mobile crane(s) to lift, move, position and place materials, equipment, and structural components per project plans
- Perform pre- and post-operation inspections of the crane to ensure safety and proper functioning; identify and report any maintenance or safety issues.
- Set up crane on site — including deploying outriggers/supports, securing crane stability, rigging loads with slings, wire ropes, hooks or other appropriate equipment.
- Read and interpret load charts, lift plans, project drawings or blueprints to plan lifts and ensure loads are within crane capacity and properly balanced.
- Work in coordination with ground crew, riggers, signalers, and other site personnel — respond to hand signals or radio instructions during lifts.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on crane — lubricating, checking cables/hoses, ensuring hydraulics and mechanical systems are in good condition.
- Maintain accurate records/logs of crane operations, loads moved, maintenance, inspections, and any incidents or issues.
- Adhere to all company safety protocols, industry regulations (e.g. OSHA), and applicable licensing/certification requirements at all times.
- Assist with equipment transport, loading/unloading, and other heavy-equipment tasks or general site labor as needed.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED (or equivalent); additional vocational/trade training preferred.
- Valid driver’s license
- Prior experience operating mobile cranes or other heavy equipment in a construction or industrial environment. (Preferably several years.)
- Solid understanding of load charts, rigging, load balancing, and safe lifting practices.
- Strong coordination, mechanical aptitude, and ability to perform inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs.
- Good communication skills; able to work with ground crew, signalers, supervisors, and other team members, often under high-pressure or time-sensitive conditions.
- Able to stand, climb, bend, and perform manual tasks, sometimes outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
Additional Skills (a Plus, but Not Required)
- Additional certifications such as rigging, signaling, or safety training.
- Experience with multiple types of cranes (mobile, telescopic, hydraulic, swing-cab, etc.).
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and lift plans. Previous experience in commercial construction projects.
- Willingness to assist with other heavy-equipment operations or general labor when crane is not in use
