Industrial Technician

Incumbent serves as Industrial Technician for the Maintenance Department, responsible for responsible for assisting with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of industrial equipment, instrumentation, electrical systems, and process control equipment throughout the Gary Sanitary District's wastewater treatment facilities and lift stations.

DUTIES:

Assist in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing industrial instrumentation and control systems.

Install, inspect, calibrate, and maintain process instruments, including flow meters, level transmitters, pressure transmitters, analyzers, and control valves.

Assist with the maintenance of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), motor control systems, and electrical panels.

Perform preventive maintenance on instrumentation, electrical, and mechanical equipment.

Troubleshoot electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electronic control systems.

Assist in installing new instrumentation and process control equipment.

Read and interpret electrical schematics, loop drawings, P&IDs, blueprints, and technical manuals.

Use testing equipment such as multimeters, loop calibrators, signal generators, and diagnostic software.

Perform minor mechanical repairs on pumps, motors, actuators, valves, and related equipment.

Complete work orders and maintain accurate maintenance records using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).

Maintain tools, equipment, and spare parts inventory.

Respond to equipment failures and emergency maintenance calls.

Follow all OSHA safety regulations, including lockout/tagout, confined space entry, arc flash, and personal protective equipment requirements.

Work collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and contractors.

Participate in an on-call rotation and work overtime as required.

Performs related duties as assigned.

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in environmental, electrical, industrial, mechanical engineering, or related field with related professional work experience; or High School diploma with 10 years’ experience in Instrumentation and Controls, electrical engineering, computer science or industrial field.

Possession of required certifications/training, including industrial electronics, PLC programming, HMI programming, Arc Flash, and Class IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator.

Ability to obtain Class IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification and OSHA 10 Certificate.

Thorough knowledge of applicable industrial/electric requirements, standards, regulations, and procedures and practices with ability to research technical resources such as NEC, ISA, and Rockwell Tech Connect, provide specifications, and troubleshoot issues.

Through knowledge of equipment used to operate, maintain, and repair utilities systems, particularly electrical and mechanical equipment, instrumentation, and related information systems.

Thorough knowledge of modification and practices of engineering with ability to assist with planning, analyzing, designing, and managing plant operations and projects.

Thorough knowledge of technical writing procedures and practices and ability to read and understand detailed drawings/sketches/layouts/specifications/maps.

Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply computer software, including, but not limited to, basic word processing/spreadsheet/graphing/presentation/email/internet and department-specific software and databases.

Thorough knowledge of the National Electric Code.

Practical knowledge of plant operations and automation with ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems and make recommendations for processes improvement.

Working knowledge of wastewater treatment and storm water regulations.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and ability to prepare correspondence, documents, and detailed reports.

Ability to Design, layout and prepare sketches for information and control systems.

Estimate materials, parts and equipment to complete assignments.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers and other City/County/State/Federal departments and agencies, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

Ability to properly operate department equipment such as computer, scanner, printer, telephone, multimeter, process calibrator, and network gateway hand tools.

Ability to Read and interpreted manuals, specifications, drawings and blueprints, meters, gauges, charts and variety of instruments.

Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences between data, people, or things, count and perform calculations, compile/classify/analyze data; and make decisions based on data analysis. Ability to solve problems and troubleshoot issues.

Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

Ability to work rapidly for long periods, work on several tasks at the same time, and complete assignments effectively amidst distractions.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in written or oral form.

Ability to regularly work extended hours and serve on call 24/7 and occasionally work evenings/weekends, travel out of town for conferences, sometimes overnight, and respond to emergencies on 24-hr basis or from off-duty status.

Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.

I. DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

Incumbent exercises analytical techniques to address problems that are embedded within the wide range of duties performed. Independent judgment is frequently needed to determine the impact of decisions on total operations and/or sets of cases. Incumbent operates within very general guidelines, adapting guidelines and rules to fit unique circumstances.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent’s duties constitute a major contribution to departmental functions and operations, with departmental objectives and policies being applied to a wide-range of complex operations. Incumbent operates within departmental objective. Interpretations of objectives are discussed with the supervisor, with work product reviewed upon completion for attainment of objectives and adherence to departmental standards and policies.

III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers and other City/County/State/Federal departments and agencies for the purposes of exchanging information, rendering service, instructing, and negotiating.

Incumbent reports directly to Instrumentation Specialist.

IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs duties primarily in an industrial setting and outdoor environment, including sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 50 pounds, handling/grasping/ fingering objects, keyboarding, hearing sounds/communication, speaking clearly, far/close vision, and color/depth perception. Outdoors, incumbent is driving; walking on uneven terrain; working in noisy environments; and is exposed to temperature extremes, wet/icy conditions, high places, confined areas, dangerous chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, and dirt. Safety precautions must always be followed, including wearing protective clothing or equipment.

Incumbent regularly works extended hours and serves on call 24/7 and occasionally works evenings/weekends, travels out of town for conferences, sometimes overnight, and responds to emergencies on 24-hr basis or from off-duty status.

Pay: $54,000.00 - $64,000.00 per year
