Automotive Technology Instructor (CTE) - Southern Garrett High School

Terms: 10 month, 7.6 Hours per day, 187 day work year, may vary depending upon the needs of the system
Salary: Unit I Teacher Blueprint Career Ladder Salary Scale ($60,010-$69,169) (Commensurate with education and experience)
Supervisor: Principal, Assistant Principal, and/or Director of Secondary Education
Availability: 2026-2027 School Year

Job Description:
Provide instruction in automotive technology, as well as develop, implement, and supervise appropriate program-related activities, in an effort to help students achieve a higher level of personal skill, gain an enhanced appreciation for the subject, and an increased level of self-esteem through rehearsals and performances. The class provides exploratory experiences in automotive maintenance & light repair and helps students become successful employees or business owners. The class emphasizes safety, procedures, equipment and tool.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Eligible for a teaching certificate/license in applicable field of education to be issued by the Maryland State Department of Education
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, including, but not limited to, the ability to interact successfully with diverse stakeholders (i.e., students, staff, administration, parents, general public, community agencies, etc.)
  • Proficiency in a variety of technology and applications
  • Successful management of confidential information and materials
  • History of initiative, discretion, leadership, and independent judgment
  • Demonstrated understanding of and attention to detail, especially as it relates to student safety and well-being
  • History of professionalism and strong work ethic
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model for students, staff, and other stakeholders
  • Ability to maintain emotional control while addressing stressful situations
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs, stoop, bend, push, pull, and move objects
  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job either with or without reasonable accommodations


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Teaching certificate issued by the Maryland State Department of Education or another state department of education in applicable field of education
  • Bachelor's degree, or higher, in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience
  • Experience working with high school age students and diverse student populations
  • ASE Master Tech Certification
  • Post-secondary degrees or classes in automotive service and/or education
  • Able to use or learn Microsoft Office Products and other technologies for the classroom


Duties and Responsibilities:

The teacher will:
  • Develop and deliver automotive maintenance and repair curriculum based on key learning objectives, utilizing best practices and various technologies to deliver instruction
  • Create a syllabus which includes key learning objectives, class norms, attendance and grading policies, work habits expectations, a calendar of due dates for class assignments, projects, quizzes, tests, etc.
  • Develop authentic, engaging, hands-on learning projects to meet learning objectives
  • Develop assessments which track effectiveness of teaching and learning
  • Develop classroom work habit expectations and grading incentives, tracking system, etc.
  • Maintain online attendance and grading on a timely basis
  • Develop and implement plan to improve attendance rates to meet CTE goals
  • Develop and maintain contacts and partnerships with local industry professionals
  • Participate in high school and CTE staff meetings as well as professional development opportunities provided through the district
  • Work administration to obtain necessary materials and resources
  • Participate in student CTE organizations, workshops and competitions (SkillsUSA, etc.)
  • Take part in promoting and marketing the program
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills, technology skills, be detailed and team oriented, and have excellent communication skills
  • Must stay current with changes that occur in the industry and discipline taught
  • Establish clear goals and learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development
  • Prepare, administer, and correct assessments and record results
  • Select and use appropriate instructional strategies including, but not limited to, lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, modeling and multi-media teaching aids to present subject matter to students
  • Evaluate student progress using appropriate assessment techniques
  • Maintain order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and take all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
  • Create a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives
  • Counsel pupils when academic and behavioral problems arise
  • Confer with parents and students regarding progress of assigned students and arrange and participate in teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences, as necessary
  • Serve on special committees, as necessary
  • Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, textbooks, materials, and facilities
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by the school, applicable programs and agencies, law, Board Policy, and Administrative Procedure
  • Account for and order classroom and program equipment and supplies, as necessary
  • Attend and actively participate in staff/faculty meetings and appropriate job-related professional development
  • Improve skill and knowledge base in subject matter, current trends, research, and methodology in instructional techniques, technology, multicultural content, problem-solving and interdisciplinary connections
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for substitutes and volunteers, as necessary
  • Contribute to the short-term and long-term successes of students, staff, the school, and the system in general.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Engage in life-long learning of professional and technical knowledge by attending appropriate workshops, reviewing professional publications and websites, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional organizations
  • Present a courteous and professional demeanor at all times
  • Demonstrate proficiency, flexibility, self-motivation, accountability, ownership, and positive demeanor
  • Ability to lift and transport heavy to moderately heavy objects averaging 50-75 lbs.
  • Significant dexterity of hands and fingers
  • Perform other duties as assigned
