Overview: We are seeking a Part-time Controller to oversee our financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strategic financial management. This position will be part of a Leadership team that includes the Lead and Executive Pastors, Accounting Manager, Finance Committee, Trustees, and Foundation Board. The position allows for flexible adaptation of work hours at home and at the Church.
Education and Experience: An undergraduate degree in Accounting or Business with at least 5 years of actual hands-on accounting experience, preferably with knowledge of accrual and fund accounting. Experience should include preparation and management of an annual budget and supporting monthly financial statements, use of accounting systems and related software. Previous experience with non-profits, reviews or audits, tax preparation, human resource involvement, and working on legal matters is considered an added plus to the position.

Accounting & Finance Responsibilities
Accounting, Analysis & Reporting
- Responsible for oversight, analysis and accuracy of all accrual accounting records for the Church including general ledger, bookkeeping (payables and receivables), financial statements, budgeting, banking and cash flow, investments, payroll and related tax filings, and insurance coverage. Provide oversight and direction for Accounting Manager who completes most of this work.
- Share monthly financial reports with the Finance Committee, Church Council and Trustees along with communicating key analytical information (verbally and in writing). Work closely with the pastors and chairpersons of the Finance Committee and Trustees and attend committee meetings. Responsible for creating and sharing meeting minutes for Finance Committee.
Budget
- With the assistance of the Accounting Manager, prepare and present the annual budget for approval taking a collaborative approach with pastors, staff, and church leaders. Manage the approved budget with an emphasis on maintaining cost controls and accountability.
Tax Reporting
- Coordinate filing of tax returns and reports to the Methodist Church, IRS, and State of Ohio for both the Church and Foundation.
Banking/Investments
- Manage bank and investment company relationships.
- Manage long-term cash flow needs.
- Manage Investment reporting to the Finance Committee & Foundation
Financial Controls
- Establish and maintain internal audit controls and policies.
- Review and sign off on nonrecurring financial transactions that exceed a preset level.
- Review preparation of monthly financial reports prepared by Accounting Manager for accuracy and share summary of key financial data sent out each month.
- Research & implement cost-saving alternatives.
- Coordinate/oversee annual review/audit steps of the Methodist Church.
Foundation
- Provide hands-on management of monthly and annual investment and accounting transactions.
- Prepare regular financial reporting to Foundation Board of Trustees.
- Coordinate relationship with accounting and tax firm and prepare all financial records for their use.
- Coordinate scheduling and attend all Foundation Board meetings along with preparing meeting minutes
Stewardship
- Work with Accounting Manager to produce regular analysis of giving and share reporting with Pastors and Church Leaders.
- Assist Pastors and Finance Committee with implementing fundraising plans.
Human Resources
- Provide support for Executive Pastor for payroll and benefit compliance including management of benefits and personnel policies documentation.
- Oversight of 403(b)(9) Church Retirement Plan.
- Work together with the Lead & Executive Pastor to implement staff compensation and policies.
Pay: $25,000.00 - $30,000.00 per year
