Position Title: Mechanic Position Type: Classified FLSA Classification: Full-time, Non-Exempt Reports To: Chief of Operations and Innovations Supervises: N/A Location: Transportation Department Anticipated Start Date: October 15, 2025 Length of Contract/Terms of Employment: Date of Hire through June 30, 2026 Salary & Benefits: Prorated Salary Range $54,560-$91,102, Employee Benefits Package Job ID#: 1464 Position Summary: The mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and inspecting the fleet of school buses and other district vehicles to ensure they meet stringent state and federal safety regulations. The work requires specialized knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, as well as complex mechanical and electrical systems. Position Responsibilities •Inspections and diagnostics: Perform regular and annual safety inspections to identify and diagnose mechanical and electrical issues. Use specialized equipment and software to troubleshoot engine, transmission, and other system malfunctions. •Preventive maintenance: Execute scheduled maintenance tasks, such as oil and filter changes, brake adjustments, and fluid checks, to prevent breakdowns. •Repairs and overhauls: Conduct repairs on engines (both gas and diesel), transmissions, differentials, electrical systems, and air brakes. Overhaul and rebuild components as necessary. •Record-keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance and repairs performed, including time spent and parts used. This documentation is crucial for regulatory compliance. •Inventory management: Order, track, and manage the inventory of parts and supplies needed for repairs and maintenance. •Emergency response: Respond to emergency road calls to service or retrieve stranded buses. •General vehicle care: Perform tire repairs, wheel alignments, and minor bodywork as needed. •Perform other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills & Ability: •Technical expertise: A strong understanding of the design, repair, and maintenance of heavy-duty vehicles, especially diesel engines. •Certification and licensing: A high school diploma or equivalent is required, but vocational training or an associate degree in diesel or automotive technology is often preferred. Many positions require specific certifications, such as a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a passenger endorsement and ASE certifications. •Problem-solving: The ability to logically identify and resolve complex mechanical issues is a key skill. •Physical stamina: The job is physically demanding and involves standing for long periods, lifting heavy equipment, and working in cramped spaces. •Attention to detail: The safety of students depends on precise and thorough work, so attention to detail is paramount.
