Lieutenant
The Lieutenant performs supervisory and administrative duties relating to the shifts. This includes supervising the daily operations of the detention facility to ensure a safe and secure environment for staff, inmates, and visitors in accordance with federal and state laws.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Supervise the work of subordinate staff by scheduling, assigning, and reviewing work.
- Provide training, counseling, approving overtime, approving timecards, approving days off, and evaluating performance.
- Ensure staff are following the Garfield County Detention Facility policies and procedures in the daily operation of the facility and maintain discipline without discrimination.
- Oversee monitoring of inmates’ activities inside the facility on a continual basis including commissary pass, mail, medication, doctor and medical visits, attorney visits, meals, and movements throughout the facility.
- Oversee searches of inmates, cells, and exterior facility grounds to locate/remove contraband and to maintain security.
- Oversee and evaluate actions taken to control/restrain violent/unruly inmates. Investigate and resolve complaints against detention facility staff including interviewing all parties and recommending disciplinary action.
- Conduct facility tours for community groups and law enforcement agencies.
- Communicate with staff members to obtain information on issues, special situations, or other areas requiring attention.
- Remains aware and knowledgeable of emergency procedures vital to maintaining good order and discipline.
- Maintains proper care and maintenance of all aspects of the facility and reports shortcomings to chain of command in a timely manner. This may entail general custodial work and notifying chain of command of any damaged fixtures or incidents that are deemed worthy.
- Responds to emergency calls and assists fellow officers as required.
- Addresses violations of policy and procedures and guidelines for operations appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Perform escorts of inmates within the secure perimeter of the facility.
- Any of duties as assigned to ensure a proper, safe, and secure detention operation.

Qualifications and Credentials
· Professional minded individual.
· Management Experience.
· High School Diploma or GED.
· Physically able to stand for long periods of time.
· Physically able to perform self-defense techniques when necessary.
· Physically able to lift up to 40lbs.
· Dedicated to the job and able to work flexible hours
· Able to respond to unscheduled work requests occasionally if needed.
- Drug test will be performed.
