What are the responsibilities and job description for the Garage Door Service Technician position at Garage Door Repair?
Learn a real trade in one week. Get paid like the people who've been doing it for ten years.
Most consistently active technicians here currently earn $12,000–$17,000 per month — and you don't need a degree, a certification, or a single day of garage-door experience to start. What you do need: real hands-on experience with tools, a strong work ethic, and the ability to look a homeowner in the eye and explain what's wrong and how you'll fix it. (Earnings are performance-based and not guaranteed — full details below.)
What this job is
OpenWay Garage Door repairs and replaces residential garage doors and openers across Central Illinois. As a service technician, you'll drive to scheduled appointments in the Champaign area, figure out what's broken, show the homeowner their options, and fix it — same visit, most of the time. This is skilled, physical, customer-facing work. Your pay is performance-based, so the technicians who stay busy and take care of people earn the most.
What you'll do
- Travel to assigned residential service appointments
- Inspect and diagnose garage doors, springs, openers, and hardware
- Explain repair or replacement options in plain English
- Prepare estimates and get customer approval before work begins
- Complete approved repairs and installations to spec
- Document your work and keep your tools, parts, and work area squared away
- Follow company procedures and safety standards every time
Who should apply
You've worked with your hands and it shows. Our best technicians came from:
- HVAC, automotive, or diesel repair
- Appliance repair or general maintenance
- Construction, carpentry, or installation work
- Handyman, field service, or farm-equipment repair
If you're mechanically inclined and tired of trading your skills for a capped hourly wage, this is built for you. Note: this is not a "no skills needed" job — you must be comfortable with hand and power tools from day one.
Training
About one week of structured, hands-on training, then supported ride-alongs and field backup as you ramp up. Some of our most successful technicians started with zero garage-door knowledge. We'll teach you the door — you bring the mechanical sense.
Compensation
You're paid a percentage of every job you complete — no cap and no wage grid. We used to pay hourly; our technicians consistently made more money on the percentage model, so we switched. Most consistently active technicians currently earn $12,000–$17,000 per month. Earnings are performance-based and depend on availability, completed jobs, customer service, sales performance, and seasonal demand. Individual results are not guaranteed. We'll walk you through exactly how the pay is calculated — with real numbers — on your first phone call.
This is a 1099 independent-contractor role: you're in business for yourself, with our jobs, training, and field support behind you.
Schedule & travel
Full-time hours serving the Champaign area. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
Physical requirements
Regularly lift 50 lbs, work on ladders, and work in garages that are hot in summer and cold in winter.
Ready?
Apply with your resume — or just answer the screener questions. If you look like a fit, we'll call you within one business day for a quick 10-minute phone conversation. No essays, no five-round interviews.
