The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is hiring a Summer General Assignment Intern working on the Politics/Government Team.
Intern will work with an editor who will provide instructive editing and supportive coaching.
Intern will be invited to focused weekly discussion classes on different aspects of journalism offered by professional newsroom colleagues.
Intern will have flexible start and end dates, and allowances for time off for family/special events with advance notice, provided the full length of the internship is fulfilled.
Intern will be part of a diverse cohort of other students from top journalism programs.
Responsibilities and Expectations:
Be on time, adaptable to changes in schedule, and willing to jump in on unexpected stories as needed. Assignments could include breaking news, features, profiles, explanatory stories, social media, collaborative work, visual journalism, or any kind of support work that comes up.
Be willing to interview subjects in person, over the telephone or through email, and write up stories as quickly as possible. Be open to challenging yourself – and being challenged by your editors. Be accepting of constructive criticism.
Take steps to include graphics and photographs in every story.
Shoot production-quality photographs that would be helpful in supporting stories.
Participate in brainstorming sessions.
Realize that this is a professional environment with high standards of journalism. Above everything else, when we walk through the newsroom doors, we must excel.
This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
