Role Description The Varsity Assistant Cross Country Coach is a part-time, on-site role based in Waltham, MA. Practices are Mondays/Wednesdays 4-5pm; Tuesdays/Thursdays 5:15-6:45pm and Sundays 9-11am.
This position supports the Head Coach in planning and leading daily practices, developing training plans, and preparing athletes for competitions throughout the cross country season. The coach will assist with supervising student-athletes during practices and meets, teaching proper running form, conditioning, injury prevention, and race strategy. Responsibilities include helping manage team logistics, such as equipment and transportation, communicating with families and school staff, and promoting a positive, inclusive team culture that aligns with Gann Academy’s values. The coach will also be expected to uphold school policies, model good sportsmanship, and contribute to the overall growth and well-being of student-athletes.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of cross country training, distance running techniques, and race strategy, with the ability to coach student-athletes at varying ability levels.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with students, families, colleagues, and administrators.
- Ability to model and promote sportsmanship, teamwork, resilience, and respect for diverse backgrounds and identities.
- Organizational and time-management skills for coordinating practices, meets, schedules, and team logistics.
- Commitment to supporting the mission and values of Gann Academy and to the holistic development of student-athletes.
- CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain; prior coaching certification or training is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in education, sports management, coaching, or a related field is beneficial.
