JOB SUMMARY:

The Galveston County Sheriff's Office is seeking a professional, community-oriented School Resource Officer to provide law enforcement services and foster a safe, secure learning environment within an assigned school district. The SRO serves as a highly visible law enforcement presence, working collaboratively with students, staff, parents, and community partners to prevent crime, build positive relationships, and respond to emergencies.

This position requires sound judgment, professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently while maintaining effective partnerships with school administrators, faculty, and first responders. The Safe Schools Deputy performs all other duties as assigned in support of the Sheriff's Office mission and the safety of the school community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Certification and Qualifications :

  • Possess a valid Texas driver’s license.

  • Hold a current and active Peace Officer license through TCOLE.

  • TCOLE training hours must be current and in compliance.

  • Must be currently qualified with a duty firearm.

  • No adverse/ disciplinary action reviews (AAR’s) or sick time abuse within the preceding twelve months.

• Knowledge and Experience :

  • Working knowledge of applicable laws, Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, and records management systems.

• Communication Skills :

  • Ability to speak, read, and write the English language in a clear and understandable fashion

  • Ability to write detailed criminal and informational reports

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the public

  • Ability to effectively utilize computers, perform data entry, and navigate electronic communication and agency software systems.

• On-Call Readiness :

  • Must be able to respond within 45 minutes when on call and remain accessible by phone and email during non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Adaptability :

  • Ability to work under adverse conditions and during irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.

• Physical Fitness :

  • Successfully pass a physical agility test. Ability to meet the physical demands of the position

• Testing and Review :

• Successful completion of :

  • Background review and interview board

  • Physical agility assessment

  • G.C.S.O. Safe Schools Field Training Program

  • School-Based Law Enforcement (SBLE #4064 or equivalent) and Texas School Safety Center Behavioral Threat Assessment Training within 120 days of appointment

  • Field Training Program and probationary period

Achieving a position on the eligibility list does not guarantee assignment as a Safe Schools Deputy. Assignments will be made conditionally, pending successful completion of field training. Failure to complete field training may result in reassignment to a vacancy within the Sheriff’s Office if qualified. The County of Galveston, the Galveston County Sheriff's Office, or any officials make no promises or guarantees of employment, either current or future.

Applicants should be aware that School Resource Officer (SRO) positions are funded through contracts with local school districts. These positions, along with related benefits and advantages, may end if contracts are not renewed. SRO personnel serve at the discretion of both the Sheriff and the school district, which may request a replacement at any time, with or without cause. Efforts will be made to offer preferential transfer opportunities to current employees, but no guarantee is made for a return to prior positions.
